It was Christmas Day and Meredith Grey sat alone at the ferryboat docks. Bundled up in a coat and scarf she looked out onto the water. After Derek had gotten together with Rose she had completely given up on having a future with Derek. She had wanted children with him but now it seemed like her most distant dream. Meredith soon figured out that Derek loved her but she was too scared to admit it until it was too late.

Derek walked out onto the docks at the ferryboat. He looked around and noticed a very familiar looking person looking out onto the water. He smiled to himself as he made his way toward her. He sat down slowly, being careful not to scare her.

"Meredith? What are you doing here?"

Meredith looked to her side slightly shocked at the voice she was hearing. "I just came to think. Where's Rose?"

He followed her gaze out onto the water and sighed. "I broke it off with her. I guess she just wasn't right for me."

Meredith looked over at him and nodded. "I see. And what are you doing here?"

He smiled and met her gaze. "I came to think. And now I want to talk to you about us."

Meredith sighed and looked over at him. "I thought we already discussed this Derek."

Derek ran his hands through his hair and sighed. "Meredith, we have established that your not ready. I get that, but you need to decide what your going to do with the rest of your life. I'm not going to stick around my whole life, waiting for you to be ready!."

Meredith looked over at him. "Damn it Derek. I am ready! I am ready to get married to you. I want to grow old with you and have children. I am ready for that. And when you were dating Rose, I thought you were going to ruin all of what I wanted with you."

Derek sighed and took her hand. "Meredith, I know you think I was going to marry Rose. But as much as I liked her, nobody could ever, in a million years, replace you. I love you Meredith."

She sighed and looked at him, tears threatening to fall. "I love you too Derek. But things are complicated."

Derek nodded and wiped her cheeks. "Things are always complicated Mere. But we can make things work this time and be happy."

She nodded and kissed him. "I hope so, because I love you so much. And I never want you to date anyone but me."

He laughed and stood up, taking her hands and pulling her up with him. "I will never ever go out with anybody ever again."

She smiled and wrapped her arm around his waist. "Good, I'd hate to have to stick Cristina on you."

He laughed and began walking toward the ferryboat with her. "That would be a shame."

They both laughed and got onto the ferryboat together. Meredith stood, leaning on the rail with Derek behind her and his nose in her hair. They were happy in that moment, starting their brand new happy lifestyle together.
