Elrond watched her as she sat amongst the trees, the blossoms beginning to bloom and the flower petals falling from the slight breeze in her hair. A few light pink petals landed in her red hair. His wife, Elleneil. His light, his reason for living. Elleneil deserved nothing less than all the happiness Middle Earth could give. Elrond did everything in his power to make her smile, for her smile was a bright as the sun. Every time she kissed him no matter how quick or long, was like a burst of her love for him and he seemed to melt in her hands. And yet, there was sadness pinned behind her eyes that no amount of kisses or nights of lovemaking could seem to cure. He had seen it many times even when she smiled at him, when she touched him and when she kissed him. It was a sadness that he couldn't quite understand.
They say elves know the one they will love when their hearts sing to each other. When Elrond laid eyes on the young redheaded princess of Savathas, her heart sang to him. He heard the most beautiful song he had ever heard in his mind. Her strikingly bright blue eyes met his steel silver eyes and it was if their hearts and souls had suddenly connected. It was only when Elrond had recalled those memories of their first meeting did he understand the sadness in Elleneil's eyes. He had heard her song and yet he had chosen another song to connect himself to. Her song was the most beautiful his mind had ever heard, her song often lulled him to sleep on restless nights. And yet he had chosen another, beautiful still, but nothing could compare to her. Her bright red hair, her striking blue eyes, a soft smile played on her features. And yet, was it because it wasn't good enough for him? No. Perhaps it was because he was afraid. At the time, Elrond had never fallen so hard for someone so fast. Perhaps that was why he waited with Celebrian, perhaps that was why he chose her.
As Elrond watched Elleneil, his first love and now his beloved wife, he understood. In her mind, Elleneil would always be second best. He could tell her how much he loved her but he had said those same words to someone else before her. It hurt him to know that she felt that way. Elleneil was beautiful as she was a warrior. Her arms were strong enough to hold a blade against Sauron. Her body was strong enough to suffer blow after blow, yet always standing back up to continue the fight. She had suffered heartbreak after heartbreak, more than any one person should. And yet, she did not hold onto those heartbreaks. She had been patient with him for many years, raising Alessea together before he finally asked her to be his wife.
Elleneil caught him staring at her. She smiled at him sweetly as she always did. She motioned to him to come out into the sun beneath the blooming trees. Elrond drew in a breath. He walked over to where she sat. Wrapping his arms around her, he began to tell her how, when he first laid eyes on her, how beautifully her heart sang.
