Incommunicado?

Disclaimer: the characters, and the song, don't belong to me, but I do own a cell phone, and it even works – occasionally :). Almost everything that happens in here has happened to me …

Stella flips her cell phone open. Again. It's the third time she's trying to call Mac within the hour. The first time she got a message that no connection could be made.

Whatever, just a problem with the network maybe.

The second time she was disconnected mid-ringing.

Darn reception in this place sometimes.

Not really any need to be worried. But given their job she's always a bit worried whenever he's out of sight or earshot. Even when it's because he has some time off, and strictly speaking nothing could happen, or should.

So, she's getting more than a bit worried now. Even though she just tries to reach him because it's so rare they both have time off, and there's someplace she wants to show him.

The third time, her cell bleeps frantically – and she sees the battery indicator drop into a very red danger zone.

Oh no, no, no! Don't you abandon me now!

Stella glares at her cell as if that way she could pass on the energy from the irritation it is causing her. It can't be, she'd only recharged it yesterday. It suddenly seems the cell doesn't dare switch itself off.

You better just have a display malfunction.

With a frightened chirp the indicator turns green again. Stella redials Mac's number. There's no ringing, no voicemail either. Strange sounds amongst the background static, like …

Traffic?

Then a voice, puzzled, "Hello?"

"Mac?" she sounds equally puzzled.

"Stella? That's odd, I just dialed your number but there was no ringing, just …"

"… funny noises?"

"Yeah."

"Me too. We must have tried to call each other at the same time." she says with a smile that he can hear in her voice. "I wonder who'll get charged for this? … Why did you want to call me anyway?"

"I just called …"

Is that Stevie Wonder playing in the background??

"… well, I just discovered this first-class coffee shop, and I was wondering if you'd like …"

"Where are you?"

He tells her.

A moment later he turns around, someone tapping him on the shoulder.

Stella, with the biggest smile. A smile that almost makes him want to withdraw his offer because he doesn't want such a smile to be hidden by a coffee cup. But he thinks it might be big enough that he'll be able to see it around the cup.

Still smiling she takes his hand and they turn to enter the coffee shop.

It is that song, playing on the radio.

They look at each other. Savor each other's smile, and the thought of spending time together.

… well, almost everything has happened to me, except that part with the coffee shop, sigh ;). Anyway, thanks for reading. Please leave a review if you enjoyed it, and if you didn't, let me know what I could improve on.
