Summary: A training session brings a young boy in a bowler hat to General Salem Saberhagen's attention.
Challenge: This fic was originally an attempt to answer Anneack's drabble challenge of 5-26-10, but I had misread the challenge. I didn't want to just toss the fic, however, and as there was no need to cut it down to 100 words, I left it as it stood. Short but, hopefully, worth the read. :-)

The commander walked along his students as they faced their fears. A catwoman shrieked as a spider dropped onto her nose and proceeded to hit herself in the face. An illusion made a Demon think his tail had been cut off. A solitary, blindfolded man fought off legions.
He stopped when he came to a lone, confused boy. "JD, why aren't you training?"
JD looked at his leader with wide eyes. "How can I when my greatest fear," he whispered, "is losing somebody I love?"
Salem covered the boy's small shoulder with a large, reassuring hand. "That, my son, is a different battle altogether. You must maintain faith at all times." And he must, Salem realized, provide this child with a strong and caring family.
