The palace was cold and empty. The opulent rooms as empty and lifeless as a hospital. The sound of footsteps echo. The camera moves along the corridor and through the large halls that emphasise the sterility and the emptiness. There is a layer of dust on every available surface, the camera turns to the left and through a door into a hospital room. The camera pans to the right, surveying the beds of people with the covers pulled over their faces until we see a man in a frock-coat leaning over the bed of a still-living patient. The man turns, it is the Doctor in his first 'generation
"Oh, good. You're here," he says, wiping the tears from his eyes, "took you long enough. Now, take a look at this patient and tell me what you think it is. You can still diagnose and treat cant you?
"Of course." Comes the voice of the tenth doctor and we realise we are the tenth Doctor.
One nods and moves aside for us to move closer to the patient, an unknown woman. Ten makes a choking sound; we hear a keening, it is ten's grief. He begins to sob and the camera zooms out to show 10 kneeling by the side if the bed including the almost dead woman and a silently weeping 1. The camera goes back in on 10 and the woman and now we can read the name above the bed: Kiardasetolimn. 10 screams in his grief and bolts upright, now sitting up in the bed in his darkened bedroom in the TARDIS wearing Howard's pyjamas, tears streaming down his face "No, not Kiarda. Not again." And he weeps.
OPENING CREDITS
10 and Martha are walking through a marketplace like the one from the episode where Tegan is the Mara. They're just looking and getting lost and immersing themselves in the culture of the planet. Martha turns to the Doctor:
"What was that noise last night in the TARDIS Doctor? Something woke me up and then I heard something that sounded like someone crying. What would've caused that?"
"I did. I had an old nightmare again last night. For the first time in a millennia."
"So, not the Time War, then?"
"No. Something older. Something much, much worse."
What could be worse than the Time War?
Who is Kiardasetolimn?
Why does she make both the Doctors cry?
And why does Ten still have Howard's pyjamas?
Some of these questions may be answered next time in The Doctor's Name.
