"What did you do?" Henry Spencer demanded, coming into the hospital room at a brisk walk. He stood at the end of Shawn's bed and crossed his arms. "Well, I'd like an explanation."
"Hi, Dad. Yes, I'm fine, thanks for asking." Shawn rolled his eyes and looked back down at his magazine.
Henry heaved an exasperated sigh. "I've told you a hundred times, Shawn, that bike is going to be the death of you."
"And a hundred times I've told you, Dad, that I am a big boy and can make my own decisions." Shawn tossed his magazine across the room, barely landing it on the visitor's chair. He grinned triumphantly.
"Oh, you're a 'big boy', huh? Well, maybe you should start taking some responsibility," Henry stated bluntly.
Shawn looked around. "That doesn't even make sense! How am I not taking responsibility, Dad? Anyone can have an accident and end up in the hospital with a broken arm and leg...even, dare I say, you."
"But I haven't," Henry said smugly.
"No, Dad, you haven't, because you're just too dang responsible."
"You know what your problem is, Shawn?"
"Oh, you haven't told me already?"
"You take risks. That isn't responsible. And neither is that bike of yours. I hope it got mangled."
Shawn shook his head and smiled. "You'll be happy to know she's in perfect health. Listen, Dad, I'm tired. Maybe we can pick up on this very interesting conversation later, okay?"
Henry pressed his lips irritably and left the room in four strides. Gus crept in seconds later, glancing back over his shoulder. "Why's he mad?"
"He's not mad," Shawn said. He reached uselessly toward his magazine. "I can't...quite...reach!"
Gus shook his head and tossed the magazine at Shawn. "What do you mean he's not mad? He didn't even say anything to me as he stormed by."
"Ah, Gus. My dad isn't mad. He's worried sick about me. He thinks that I don't know that, but I do."
"Your dad has a strange way of showing concern."
"My dad is a strange man. Now, did you bring me that pack of gummy worms?"
