"Maya, are you asleep?"

The quiet voice coming from the other side of the bed woke up Maya Hart from her light slumber, and she rolled over to see her best friend, Riley Matthews staring at her with wide eyes.

Maya yawned and grumbled. "No."

Riley was spending the night at Maya's house while her parents were taking her younger brother to see Googly Oogly on Ice. She had only ever slept over at Maya's once before, and while it turned out not to be as scary as she anticipated, it still made her a little anxious to be spending the night. She rarely ever slept away from home, and she had grown used to the comfy texture of her own bed.

Riley stared at her friend with wide eyes, her face appearing to be younger than she actually was. Riley had always been youthful, with her clear skin and bright eyes. "I can't sleep."

Maya was kind of at a loss. "Well, what do you want me to do?"

"Talk to me until I fall asleep."

The blonde laughed half heartedly, still feeling groggy. She wasn't used to being woken up in the middle of the night. "That sounds like something a married couple would do."

Riley blushed and shook her head. "No! My parents do it all the time!"

"Honey, are you implying that your parents aren't married?"

It took a moment for Riley to comprehend what Maya had said. "What?... Wait! Oh, yeah!" She scratched the back of her head sheepishly and giggled, her cheeks turning an even darker shade of red then they had been before. "I can't help it, I'm tired. I don't know what I'm saying. I mean, it's already like, midnight!"

"Riles, it's 9:00."

"And my bedtime is 8:30."

Maya smiled. She couldn't help it. She always found herself enthralled by the adorableness of her best friend, who was a teenager, but acted like a child. "Fine, what do you want to talk about?"

Riley looked down, refusing to meet Maya's questioning eyes. "Us."

"You want to talk about us?"

"Yeah."

"Well, what about us?"

It was silent for a good five minutes before Riley finally spoke up. "Maya, if I told you something really bad about myself, would you still be my friend?

"What? Of course I would!"

"Even if it was something really super bad... And it involved you?"

"Riley, I'll always be your friend, no matter what."

The brunette was blushing profusely. "Even if... I liked you as more than... A friend?"

Maya didn't exactly know how to respond at first. She had always had to admit that she found her best friend to be pretty cute, but she had never really thought of her in that way. "Well... I-I guess so..."

"Good."

Before Maya could say anything else, the brunette had pressed their lips together, and wrapped her arms around her friends shoulders. Maya stared for a moment, before her eyes fluttered shut and she found herself reach around Riley's waist, holding her close.

As they pulled away, Riley gave her a goofy grin. "I love you, Maya."

Maya stroked her friend's hair, watching as Riley's eyes slowly closed and she fell into a deep slumber in the darkness of the room. "I love you too, Riles."
