The Present

It was a calm spring night at the Bonnefoy residence. A calm spring breeze swept by the young Canadian as he waited for his father. Violet eyes looked out past the gate, waiting for a silver car to pull up into the drive way. A small white polar bear sat next to the boy, keeping an eye on him as if he was a guard dog.

"Kuma…When do you think Papa will be home?" The young boy asked, sitting on the brick steps.

"Soon." The bear replied, placing a paw on the child's leg. Another breeze, a bit stronger, passed by. To the Canadian, today was a special day. It was July 14th, his papa's birthday.

"Hopefuwy. I wanna give papa his gift." The child smiled as he reached over, petting his bear. Not even a few minutes later, a silver car pulled up into the drove way. The boy jumped up and waited for the car to be completely still before running over to it, standing near the passenger-side door. As the door opened, the boy ran over and hugged the gentleman.

"Welcome back Papa~ How was the trip?" He asked, looking up at him. The Frenchman pulled his son close before kneeling down.

"It would have been better if you were with me Matthieu." His French accent shined though as he picked up his son. In his other hand, there was a basket. The boy looked curiously at it, but said nothing about it until they both were inside.

"Papa? What's in the box?" He asked, hopping on to the couch. Francis sat next to Matthieu, holding the box in his lap.

"It's for you. I think you'll like it." He was about to hand him the box until Matthieu jumped off the couch quickly.

"Hang on Papa! I have a pwesent for you!" He said, quickly making his way over to a small table. On the table, there was a small box wrapped in blue wrapping paper. A red and white ribbon was placed on the top.

Matthieu made his way back to the couch and handed the present to him.

"Happy Birthday Papa!" Matthieu smiled, watching as Francis placed the other small box next to him and placed the present on his lap. Slowly, he opened it to find a small keep-sake box with a card attached to it. It read:

Happy birthday Papa! I hope this box will be used for important things like to hold memories. I would of gotten you something else, but this was a last-minute thing. I hope you enjoy it! Smile! :3

~Matthieu Bonnefoy

Francis read the card a few times before setting the card back into the box, taking out the keep-sake box. It was painted white with a small French flag on it, along with a Canadian flag right next to it so that it formed an X. Tears formed in the corners of his eyes before placing the small box back inside, moving it to the side where the other box was. Matthieu looked at him slightly confused.

"Yew don't wike it Papa?" He asked, moving closer to him. He than saw the tears. The child pulled his father into a tight hug, placing his chin on his shoulder.

"No, I love it. Thank you Matthieu." Francis picked up his son and gently placed him on his lap. Matthew gave him a big smile, even giggling a bit.

"We'll always be together forever, no matter what. Right Papa?" He asked, his violet eyes searching for something in blue eyes, temporary forgetting about the other box.

"Of course Matthieu. No matter what."

A/N: I'm sorry if I made anyone teary-eyed. ;-; I started to cry when I finished this. It's short, I know, but it's adorable. Mattie's 7-8 so it was before he was taken away. Thank you for any reviews! 3
