Prologue:

The Trigger

For once in his life, Kurt Hummel was happy. He had finally found bliss with a guy he loved and was living the dream. He was a part of an admittedly controlling acapella all male show choir, he lived with a now complete family now that his dad had married his former crush's mother, and he could say without any doubt that he felt truly happy for the first time since his mother had passed away.

It was an odd thing then that he felt that there was something missing. Blaine seemed distant after the first two weeks of being together. He spent less time with Kurt, he avoided his calls and seemed preocupied whenever he answered. Kurt was an optimistic person and didn't think anything of it but the fact was his love for Blaine was blinding him from the truth.

"I'm sorry Kurt but this isn't working. I hope we can be friends. See you at Warbler Practice – Blaine. PS: Courage." That was the text response he got when Kurt texted him asking why he wasn't at The Lima Bean for their daily morning coffee. You would have expected him to do something typically Kurt like be extra bitchy or moody when he saw Blaine next but nothing changed. He remained the same during the school day, his usually nice kind calm self. That changed when Blaine had to be his insensitive dapper self.

Kurt had entered the cafeteria, expecting nothing more than to eat some fancy cuisine while planning for the next lesson. He had sat down alone, nibbling on a pastry thing when the doors of the room burst open. The Warblers (minus him) had entered in a typical movement of that to a performance, quickly followed by Blaine. He had started singing "Under Your Spell" from the Buffy musical. As he was singing in his sultry tones, Kurt felt himself melt. 'He's apologising,' He thought, 'He's begging me to take him back!'

Kurt suddenly as had a reality shock when Blaine walked right past him and sang directly at some small timid looking blonde boy. His heart sank as he saw the kid smiled in the same way he had done during Blaine's rendition of Teenage Dream. He tried to keep it together as his club members sang along, some encouraging him to take part. (Those few got a death glare in return)

The moment Blaine had finished singing, Kurt made a loud show of getting up and leaving the room. Blaine called after him but he found himself ignored. Kurt ignored everything as he left the Dalton building and arrived at home.

He made a minimal effort with his family, chatting at the kitchen breakfast nook. Finn had the television on flicking through the channels, Carole was making dinner and Burt was going through paperwork he had brought home from the office. It was a scene that could have brought Kurt out of his funk if it wasn't for what happened next.

Finn's channel hoping had landed on a certain Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episode. The moment the opening notes of Under Your Spell hit Kurt's brain, his mind cracked. He could no longer hear the outside world. He could not register the hands waving in front of him trying to get his attention. He couldn't see how panicky Carole was, how desperate Burt was to get through to him, how Finn was dialling a number in his phone.

All Kurt was thinking was one thing: "I wish I could go back, I wish I could undo it, I wish I had never met Blaine, I wish I had never met The Warblers, I wish I'd never leave my family.."

The song lyrics of an old children's movie ran through his head as time reversed internally...

Dancing bears
Painted wings
Things I almost remember,
And a song someone sings
once upon a december

Someone holds me safe and warm,
horses prance through a silver storm,
Figures dancing gracefully,
across my memory...
