The Exorcist

Tired, bored, flicking through channels
Pausing, watching, remembering
The Exorcist

Never seeing it
Circling apartment ads instead
Packing her bags
The smell of uneaten stir fry wafting past
Moving out days later

The channel not changing
Watching alone, without anyone to protect her
Watching all the way through
Essence of uneaten pizza accompanying her
Yelping, screaming
Shielding eyes
Memories returning

Burying her head in his shoulder
Him laughing at her fears
But still holding her close
Him lining up another horror movie, and another
More excuses for holding her close

Tears starting to fall
Missing his arms, his strength, his warmth

Finally admitting
Over two years later
After Michael and Gates and Brenner
Fear, her biggest demon
Fear of failure, of heartbreak, of lose
One fear overcome, the fear of horror, one demon exorcised
The next one bigger, scarier

Reaching for the telephone
Dial tone buzzing in her ear
Just a few digits away
Slowly, one button at a time
Ringing, ringing
A voice answering
'Ray'

Another demon exorcised, another fear overcome
