The Street Musician

by orangepumpkins

"Aren't you cold?"

Antonio looked up from his guitar to see a small child, perhaps eight years old at most, clad in a red jacket and a thick scarf. In contrast, Antonio had merely a threadbare jacket from goodwill over his hoodie. The brisk late November air was a bit chilling. Smiling, he answered, "A little bit, yeah. But my music warms my soul!"

The young brunet looked unconvinced. "If your body's cold, you're going to catch a cold like Feli did."

"Who's Feli?" Antonio asked, smiling at the kid's concern.

"My little brother. Me and Nono are buying his medicine because he is weird and likes grape flavour and not strawberry like we have at home from when I was sick. I'm Lovino."

"I'm Toni. Nice to meet you Lovino." The Spaniard said, extending his hand. Cautiously, Lovino accepted it and they shook.

"Lovi! Where are you?" A deep voice sprinkled with a foreign accent called from the supermarket doors.

"I'm coming!" Lovino called. "Bye bye Toni."

"Bye Lovi."

"Don't call me that!" Lovino called back as he ran to his grandfather.

As Antonio began to once again pluck out a tune on his guitar, he heard small, quick footsteps patter their way towards him. Looking up, he saw a red cheeked Lovino, one mittened hand fisted into a ball. Wordlessly, he dropped the contents into Antonio's open guitar case. A handful of change, probably at least ten dollars worth, sprinkled on the run down velvet red of the case's lining. "Nono said that your job is to make people happy with your music but you are underpaid. That's my allowance. I've been saving up for three weeks." And before Antonio could refuse the eight year old's savings, Lovino once again spoke. "Mama says it's rude not to say thank you when people give you things.

"But…" Antonio started. "Thank you Lovi."

The child flashed a rare grin before running back to his waiting grandfather. "Don't catch a cold."

Not too soon after Lovino left, the temperature dropped yet again as the day turned to evening and the red sky turned dark blue. Normally, Antonio would have continued to play until well past nine, but thinking back to Lovino's orders, he figured it wouldn't hurt to stop early for a day.

author's note:

Just a random little drabble that I wrote when I was bored. I will probably have at least one more chapter. The title is still a working progress as well because I don't really know where I am going with this. Please be sure to tell me what you think :)
