Life Goes On

I see Effie Trinket at the stage, about to announce the tributes from District 12 for the 74th Hunger Games. "Primrose Everdeen," She calls out.

"No!" I hear myself shriek.

I wake up gasping. I find myself safely in my bed, with my husband, Nathan, lying next to me.

"Are you okay, honey?" He asks me with concern in his eyes. "This has been happening a lot lately."

"No, no, I'm okay," I say, rubbing the sleepiness out of my eyes.

"The same nightmare?" He asks me.

I nod.

"Mommy, mommy, what happened?" Calls Charlotte as she comes running into our room.

"Nothing, sweetie, mommy just had a bad dream. Go back to sleep, it's too early for you to be up," I say, kissing Charlotte on the forehead. "C'mon, I'll carry you back to bed." Charlotte hops into my arms and I carry her back to her room. I smile as I notice that on the wall next to her bed she has posted a countdown of the days until her birthday, even though it's 3 months away. "You forgot to cross of yesterday," I say, smiling at her.

"Oh yeah!" She says, her eyes widening. She pulls out her favorite marker and crosses the day off.

"Good night, Charlotte," I say as I leave the room.

"Mommy, wait!" She cries.

"What's wrong Charlotte?"

"I need you to tell me a story," She says. I want to go back to bed, but there is no way I can resist the Bambi eyes she's giving me.

"Okay then. How about I tell you a story about Aunt Katniss?" I say. She nods, eager to hear what I have to say.

"Well," I begin, taking a deep breath, "when your aunt and I were little there was an event called the Hunger Games…"

And as I tell her the story, I can't help but think how she looks so much like Katniss did as a little girl.
