Lost Along the Way
Chapter One, Together Alone
SNAP!
Kye spun, searching for the source of the sound. The girl tried to swallow the knot in her throat as she watched the dead man stumble towards her, taking in every detail about him. Blood stained his shirt, guts tangled and smeared over his mouth. Kye shuddered at the sight, the bashes of nausea pushing in every way of her stomach. The girl padded her sides until she felt the handle of her knife, pulling it out. By the time she had grabbed her knife the walker was ready to attack. The corpse reached for her, knocking her down. The girl struggled to keep him from biting her. The walker gnawed the air as she continued to fight, putting as push of it's pressure on one arm. She breathed frantically, sliding her free hand underneath her and pulling the gun from her back pocket. Her arm was shaking, unable to support it. Kye straightened her shaking arm and aimed the tip of her gun in between the walker's eyebrows. A loud bang rang through her ears as the walker collapsed on her. She closed her eyes, breathing in and out heavily.
After a minute she shoved the walker off, grunting as she stood up and dusting off her pants. The girl sighed, swinging her backpack over shoulder and picking up the knife from the ground and sliding it into it's cover. Her breath caught in her throat when she realized they'd be here soon. She didn't want to be here when a group the dead made their way through.
Kye stopped for a small breath, resting the palms of her hands on her knees and bending down slightly. The sound of her heartbeat pulsated through her ears and her chest felt like it was going to burst. Kye swallowed and straighten her posture and began to walk, her hands resting on her hips as she continued to breathe heavily. She gnawed on her bottom lip, moving her hand and massaging her left arm. The girl stopped in her tracks, smiling when she came upon a men's prison, it was shelter and shelter was good right now. It wasn't that far so the girl started her pace again, pumping her arms.
After a couple minutes of running she was finally at the gate. She took a few deep breaths and tossed her bag over the large fence. Kye stuck the tip of her shoe in the fence, pulling herself up. Once she reached the top she jumped over. Kye picked up her bag and ran for the nearest door, hoping that none of them would notice her presence. Kye groaned when she heard the low growls and moans make their way toward her.
Kye threw open the door and scanned for more walkers. There seemed not to be any in sight so she walked in and shut the door behind her. Kye leaned back against the door, closing her eyes as she felt the walker's moan and groan, banging on the door. Kye pushed herself of the cell block door and roamed the halls of the prison, searching for a room she could rest in for the night.
The girl continued to walk, scanning the walls for doors. Kye stopped at the door in front of her and swung it open, taking in every detail of the boiler room. Kye sighed, slowly making her way in and shutting the door behind her. She took the crowbar that fit in a pocket of her bag and slipped it between the door knob and the wall.
Kye busted out her gun, fingers wrapped around it tightly and one resting on the trigger; she walked further into the room, quieting her breathing. Once the girl knew she'd be safe she dropped her hands to her sides and sighed of relief. The girl dropped the bag on the floor, kicking it to the side. Kye put the safety on her gun and slid it in her back pocket. She made another quick glance around the setting and leaned against the wall behind her, sliding down it and pulling her knees to her chest. Kye wiped the sweat forming on her brow and pushed her grimy hair out of her face, reaching over to her bag and laying it down on the ground beside her. Kye sprawled out, resting her head on the bag. Kye quietly hummed to herself, hoping it would make her feel a little calmer. The girl flipped on her side and pulled her knees to her chest, curling up into a ball to keep warm. Her eyelids slowly got heavy; snapping them open every time she was about to fall asleep.
I woke to the sound of clattering and voices. I moaned at the noise, this was the first time I actually slept for more than 6 hours. I patted the floor tiredly in search for my gun, it took me a little while but I found it. I stood from my place on the floor, taking in a deep breath. I walked over to the door, pulling it open slightly so I can scan the hallway. When it was clear I walked out of the room cautiously. I quickly pushed my back against the wall and slid along towards the voices. I froze for a moment, hearing the sweet sounds of a human being. Or maybe I'm just finally going insane and it's all in my head. I took a second and took a quick breath while I tightened my grip on the gun.
I removed my body from the wall and swung around the corner, ready to shoot. A bright light flashed into my eyes, and I started panicking. I couldn't see at all, so I backed up to the wall behind me and I saw a group of survivors. Several of them were holding flashlights and they were all pointed at me. I looked at each and every one of them, looking for sign of humanity in these people. My eyes landed on a boy that looked around my age with bright blue eyes and dark hair, who of course was pointing a gun at me also. Great.
"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" I pleaded as I dropped my gun to the floor. "I'm not bit... I swear."
I threw my hands in the air, my hands shaking just a little too much.
"Who are you?" Asked one of the men. He had grayish brownish hair and he looked like he hasn't shaved in a while.
"K-Kye" I stuttered out dropping my hands to my sides while they lowered their weapons.
"Are you alone? How old are you?" Questioned a very pregnant woman
"Y…Yeah, It's just me." I shot a sad smile to the group and gazed back to the pregnant woman, " thirteen."
The woman dropped her head, gazing back at her group. A few seconds later the woman's attention went back to me.
"When did you get here?" The woman asked
"Yesterday," I replied quickly
The pregnant woman walked over to the group. I tried to listen to what they were discussing but they were whispering. The scruffy man glanced over at me and let out an exasperated sigh. The pregnant woman walked away from the group, and made her way over to me.
"So, Kye, I – We..." The woman glanced back at the group and then back to me "Would really like it if you'd come with us… but that's only if you want to."
The woman placed a hand on my shoulder and I glanced up at her. I knitted my eyebrows together in thought; maybe they would be good for me. Maybe they could help me find my family. I looked behind the pregnant woman and searched for a reason not to… but I couldn't find anything.
"Yeah…yeah, that sounds great." I replied as I turned my attention back on the woman
"Great." The woman grinned as she wrapped an arm around me, as she walked us closer to the group.
"I'm Lori, and this is Rick" Lori said pointing to the scruffy man "Carol… That's Beth and Maggie," I followed everywhere she pointed "Daryl, Glenn… T-Dog…Hershel and my son, Carl"
I nodded at each of them
"It's nice to meet all of you." I grinned at all of them and most of them nodded back at me. "I'll uh… be right back. I need my bag."
I walked over to where I dropped my gun and I picked it up making my way back to the room. Shutting the door behind me I let out a shaky sigh moving hair out of my face. I really hope I'll be safe with this group. I leaned down and picked up my bag and putting it on my back.
"Let's do this." I pep talked myself walking back out to the group
"So, where to?" I asked with a grin
A/N: Yeah it looks horrific but I tried and that counts for something right? I hope you (whoever is reading) enjoyed this chapter.
