One Day Over the Rainbow
The little girl wandered away from the kitchen where her older half-sister was preparing supper. Crawling into the living room she sat staring up a picture that was sitting atop the table. The man smiled down at her, captured for all eternity.
She stared up at the man, the man she loved, who she thought had loved her. But where had he been all these days while her mother had wept? Where had he been when her half-sister, his daughter, had decided to continue living with them? Where had he been when her half-sister had stopped hanging out with her bad friends and made new, good friends? Where had he been to feed her, bathe her, clothe her, change her? Why had it always been her mother and half-sister who cared for her?
The music coming from the kitchen changed and a mans voice sang, "Somewhere over the rainbow…" She remembered the song as a song her father had once sung to her. She remembered it from the last time she had seen him.
She heard two people walk into the room. Mommy was home, and Rachel was standing beside her. They smiled down on her with sadness. It had been six months, but no one had bothered to explain it to her.
"Daddy?" the little girl uttered, looking at the picture.
Elizabeth walked over and sat down on the couch, pulling her daughter up on her lap. "Ella, sweetie, daddy's gone. He can't come back. He died."
Ella looked up at her mother with big, round eyes. "Daddy gone for good?"
Elizabeth nodded her head and then said, "But he didn't want to go. And he loves you very much."
The little girl's eyes sparkled with tears now.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Where skies are blue
And the dreams that you dream of
Once in a lullaby
Daddy's gone. But is he really gone for good? Ella wanted to see her father again, and so did her mother and half-sister. Had her father been trying to tell her something when he had sung that song to her that last time she had been with him? Had he been reassuring her that one day they all would be together again? One day over the rainbow?
Somewhere over the rainbow
"I love you, daddy."
Where skies are blue
Tears feel on Ella's head from Elizabeth and Rachel who were now both hugging her.
And the dreams that you dream of
Once in a lullaby
