Helpless
He had to find her. Amidst the chaos around Metropolis with people dealing with the aftermath of the storm, he had to get to her. He had to tell her. People were running around, chasing stories in the Daily Planet. Clark tried to get to the Bullpen as quickly as he could, despite hearing people crying for help all around him. This is the hardest thing he has ever had to do, since saying goodbye to his father. But he had to forcefully ignore being Superman so that he could be there for Lois. If only for a moment. And there she was.
"Hey Clark, what's going on?" Lois asked.
"There's something I need to tell you," Clark said nervously. He tried to steady his emotions and his need to run and heed the call of others.
"What is it Clark?" "Lois..."
"Excuse me, Ms. Lane?" an Army Sergeant interjected behind Clark's back, "We need to speak with you."
"Okay," Lois said shakily. "I guess I'll talk to you later Clark?"
He tried to hold her gaze as much as he could. In his eyes he tried to express his sorrow for her and his desire to let her know that she is not alone and that he is always there for her. Especially through this impossible situation.
But how can you let someone you love, hear something that will undoubtedly put them into a perpetual nightmare?
It was out of his hands.
He couldn't save her or shield her from this. And that killed him inside. His heart was aching to help her.
Then he heard other people crying for help again and his need to help them outweighed his desire to help Lois at that moment.
"I'll be back for you," he whispered.
And then she left and shortly thereafter, he was gone.
