Saying Goodbye

Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling does. The quote isn't mine either.

"It is better to have loved and lost, then to have never loved at all."

The snow was falling like crystals all around them, covering the already-white ground. The lake was frozen to the point were you could ice-skate atop it. The trees were shifting in the wind It was one of the most beautiful views you could have the privilege to see. There were several children making snow angels, or having snowball fights. They all seemed carefree and innocent despite what was going on around them, oblivious to the second war outside of Hogwarts's safe walls. Almost all of them had forgotten their own troubles as soon as they saw the fluffy, white flurries.

Almost all of them.

Two students, though didn't play in the snow, nor did they seem carefree. A young boy with unruly, black, raven hair and emerald-green eyes, led a young girl with brown hair and honey-brown eyes into a secluded spot, faraway from all the other students. They were both silent as the walked the pathway leading there. Both were in their 7th year, the boy being the ever so famous Harry Potter, the Boy-Who-Lived, and the other, his best friend of seven years Hermione Granger.

Hermione knew that this wasn't some spontaneous idea that he had sudden had. She knew what was going to happen, she knew what he was going to say. The pair had been together for awhile, since the end of their sixth year, yet just a few weeks ago the duo broke up. She knew he still loved her, as much as she did him. Hermione also knew that they had only broken up because he was scared for her safety. To be completely honest, they had both been miserable without the other.

Harry abruptly stopped, and turned to face Hermione. They stared into each others eyes, seeing the love that they shared. She broke their eye contact, not wanting him to see the tears forming behind her eyes. She had promised herself earlier that she wasn't going to cry about this again. His hand slowly came up and cupped the right side her face. He caressed her cheek before suddenly capturing her lips with his own. She broke away from the gentle kiss and stared into his eyes.

"You know we can't be together," she said mournfully.

"I know," Harry responded as morbidly as she had, never breaking their eye contact.

If anyone had walked in on their private haven, and took one look at the pair, they'd assume they had walked right into a tragic story of love and lost. You'd want to say how unjust it was for it to end this way, yet you'd understand the reasoning behind it all.

Harry captured her lips again, this time the kiss longer, and a bit more passionate, like those kisses you only seem to see in the movies. After awhile, they finally pulled apart. He then, pulled her into a warming embrace. It was one of those rare moments that they had to bask in the glow of their bittersweet happiness. Showing them both the temptation and the grievance of it all.

It's sort of ironic how the largest events in life, the ones that change you, can be but the shortest memories. How the most pure love can come at the most troubling time. But, most of all the unfairness of it all, to have that special bond with someone, then to have it suddenly ripped away from you, causes you the greatest hurt of all.
