It isn't the first thing on his mind after he wakes up but it's always the last thing on his mind before he falls asleep at night. He'll notice it the first or second time he goes to write out the day's date on a chart or a check or something like that then it will hit him.

It's his wedding anniversary.

At least, it would have been if he and Addison were still married. It's funny, it was something he could never keep track of when they had actually been married but since they signed the papers he hasn't missed a single one.

Derek will wear that knowledge around with him all day long. It's something that nags at him in the back of his mind. It's kind of like wondering if he left his car's headlights on or if he turned the coffee pot off in the morning. It's a simple thought that sits in the back of his mind and there's isn't anything he can do about it.

When he has quiet moments during his day he starts wondering what plans they would have made for this special date. It could be a fancy dinner or just a movie if there was something that Addison really wanted to see or even a play. Derek remembers the time he took her to see The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.

It was her favorite. She knew all of the words to all of the songs and still cried at the end but as beautiful as the play was… Derek was riveted by his wife. He couldn't take his eyes off of her all night because she was so gorgeous and so happy that she glowed. They would see it many times together and it never got old for either of them.

Derek always thinks about what silly traditional gift they would have exchanged to mark the occasion. They always played by the rules and obeyed the typical gifts like cotton or wood or copper. He'd ask her why he could not just get her a nice piece of jewelry or a really nice handbag that she would be sure to love and have that be the end of it. And she'd say that it was more of challenge doing it the traditional way and he was a smart guy so he could always figure something out.

So he spends the whole day like that. Derek wonders about what they would be doing or what far out gift he would have had to search for to commemorate that particular year and he would remember all of the wonderful anniversaries they've had before.

But mostly he wonders about Addison. What she was doing that day or how work was going for her or how she'd slept the night before? He wondered if Addison ever noticed the date on the calendar and if she remembered their anniversary. Derek figures it doesn't matter much because he hasn't forgotten. And he doubts he ever will.
