"Juliet." She knew the voice. Tom came to the cage where they locked her away, like a prisoner. Nevertheless, she deserved it; she killed one of her own people.

"What, Tom?" He started to unlock the cage door.

"Your trial is going to start in about three hours. We are putting Shepard in here." When he was finally finished opening the cage, he stepped aside. "What happened to you, Juliet? When you got here, you were the biggest coward I had ever met. You didn't even open up to anyone for two months! Now you go around killing people, your own people, for some doctor and his friends?"

And a coward she had been. Juliet recalled how she used to be when she lived in Miami with her sister. People pushed her around every day, even strangers she had never seen in her life. Her daily routine consisted of picking up the dry cleaning of her "friendly" next-door neighbor who she had only talked to once, and then she was off to pick up her ex-husbands lunch.

She laughed as she remembered him. When she actually cared about his death. Back three years ago, when she was caring. Now she was a heartless killer herself, no better then the people who brought her here. 'The island really does change people,' she thought.

"Move it!"

Juliet grudgingly took her exit from the cage. Some of the others stared her down as she walked by, to the court that would decide if she would live or die.

Tom spoke up before they reached the courtroom. "Why did you do it, Juliet? Why did you kill Danny?"

She said nothing. Even though she knew she was supposed to feel bad, the death was just another common thing. Why was she even being persecuted? Danny was going to kill Sawyer and Kate anyways. Was he any better then her? She couldn't wait to leave their little group of hypocrites.

"I'm talking to you! I hope you don't keep your mouth shut in there, or you're dead for sure. Too bad you're not in good old Benny's good graces anymore. Hopefully Danny will get some justice." He smiled, waiting for her reaction.

She gave him nothing but an emotionless stare. She did what she had to do, and she knew it. Nothing else mattered. Except him. Jack. She couldn't seem to get the doctor out of her head.

"Alright, then. I guess you don't have to defend yourself to me, Get in there and wait."

----

Carrying a plate with a grilled cheese sandwich, she made her way to Jack. A few hours earlier, she was in the same situation, stuck in that cage, not knowing what will happen next.

When he saw her, he got up, pacing around the cage.

"I hear you only like them grilled."

He smiled a little, and then said, "I missed the toothpicks too."

Juliet folded the sandwich and pushed it through the bars to Jack. She could not express her gratitude to him. He barely knew her, and he had saved her life.

Jack's expression got serious though. "Let me see."

"Jack…"

"They marked you. Let me see it."

Reluctantly, she turned around, and lifted up the back of her shirt, revealing an 8-pointed star burned onto her back. After Jack looked at it, she let go of her shirt and turned around.

He looked upset, but she couldn't read him. It was a mark, but he looked as if they had branded her for life. "Go break a branch off of that aloe plant-"

"Jack…" She interrupted. She was somewhat happy that he cared so much, but she just wanted to forget about the whole thing.

"Please. Please do it."

She gave a little nod, and walked to the plants, bending over, and breaking off a little branch. Pushing herself up, she came back to Jack.

"Turn around."

She complied, pulling the tail of her shirt up again. Jack began to rub the aloe on her burn. Rarely did Juliet turn into a romantic, but she swore she could feel sparks when he helped her burns. Maybe, just maybe, she wasn't so heartless after all.
