Finn was alone in the treehouse. It was nice that it was so quiet, but it had been a while, and it was a little too quiet. The only living soul to talk to was that stupid beetle, and she refused to sink that low. Challenger had gone to find some plant he wanted for his experiments. Roxton had gone hunting, and Marguerite had gone with him.
"Hey, anybody home?" A voice wafted up through the windows. "It's Assai."
Finn poked her head out the window. "It's a what?" There was a pretty young girl with long, dark hair standing just outside the fence. She wasn't armed.
"I'm Assai. Who are you?"
"Finn," She answered suspiciously.
"Is anybody else home?" The girl asked.
"No."
"Can I come up?"
Finn regarded her warily. "George said I shouldn't talk to strangers."
"I'm not a stranger, honest." She took a knife out of her belt and laid it on the ground. "No weapons."
"Well, okay. But only because I'm bored."
A moment later, Assai rose up the elevator. "Hello, Finn. How did you meet the people who live here?"
"They accidently brought me back here from the future with a weird thingy in a cave."
"Oh." On the plateau, this seemed like a perfectly reasonable explanation. "I am from the Zanga village nearby. Veronica and I have been friends since we were children."
"I haven't met Veronica."
"So, you only live here with Challenger and Roxton and Marguerite?"
"And Arthur," she amended gloomily.
Assai's face lit up. "Arthur Summerlee has returned?"
Finn looked at the bug quizically. "I didn't know he was ever gone. How can Challenger be sure he found the right one again?"
Assai seemed confused until she noticed the beetle sitting in his terrarium. "No, Arthur Summerlee was one of the explorers in this expedition. He dissapeared. I think Challenger felt bad about it. They hadn't been very good friends, but he misses Arthur now."
"Oh. So he's not really talking to the bug."
"Huh?"
"Never mind," Finn said. "What are they like?" She pointed to Veronica's pencil sketch of herself and Malone. "They talk about them a lot."
Assai beamed at the thought of her missing friend. "Veronica is very brave and strong. She has survived on her own since she was eleven. She wants to find her parents. That's where she is now, searching. Ned, he's a very good writer, he's very kind. But he thinks he's not interesting enough. He's kind of trying to find himself."
"Are they married?"
Assai laughed a little. "Nobody knows what they are. They don't know."
Finn paused and looked as though she was thinking of how to phrase her next question. Finally, she decided. "Why is Marguerite such a jerk?"
"Nobody knows. It's one of the great mysteries of the plateau. Anyway, she's not half as bad as she used to be."
Finn's eyes widened in horror. Was that possible?
"Roxton's gone a long way in making sure she stays out of trouble."
"So, why does she hate him?"
"She doesn't. Challenger hasn't explained them to you?" Finn shook her head. "Veronica calls it. . . playing hard to get. They play that a lot."
"You mean they're in love????"
"Yes, but if you value your safety, you'll NEVER point that out to them. Ned did once. Marguerite beat him up."
Finn laid her head down on the table. "Give me nuclear warfare and slavers. I can't take this."
