Prologue

"Come on, Eevee! We'll never find the treasure if you toughen up and quit being such a baby!"

The scared little Eevee walked nervously behind his confident trainer. The thirteen-year-old boy was armed with a flashlight and several PokéBalls at his waist. He, like many others before him, had heard the legend of Lavender Tower. There was supposedly an ancient treasure resting in the basement, as well as a legendary ghost-type Pokémon that nobody had ever seen before.

Rick didn't believe any of the stories about people whose souls were taken by ghosts or any of that. All he wanted was to see if the legend was true. Was there a legendary Pokémon in the basement? Was there treasure?

Eevee's innocent brown eyes flickered back and forth, looking at the gravestones in the basement. The basement was just like the rest of Lavender Tower - tombstones scattered everywhere, each home to a deceased Pokémon. This was the original burial site of Lavender Tower, and the rest of the tower had long since been built over it. It gave Eevee the shivers just to be down here.

Besides the light of Rick's flashlight, the basement was as black as a tomb. Well, it was a tomb. Rick found a set of stairs that led deeper down underground. Oh, sure, Eevee thought. As if this basement's not creepy enough, let's make it deeper!

A crash sounded, echoing off the grimy walls. Eevee dove onto Rick and buried himself in his shirt, causing Rick to yelp and drop the flashlight. The blond-haired boy growled and set Eevee back on the floor.

"It was nothing. Let's keep going."

---

Several floors and eerie moans later, the pair had finally reached the point to where there were no stairs leading down anymore. The very bottom of the multi-level underground basement. Except for Rick's breathing, it was silent.

Eevee wished something would moan. The only thing more terrifying than a grave filled with ghostly howls was a grave that was utterly silent. It made Eevee feel like the spirits were watching him and waiting for the right time to pounce. He stuck closer to Rick's heels, narrowly avoiding footsteps.

"Yeah! We did it, Eevee! All we have to do now is find the treasure and the legendary Pokémon!" Rick released a Charmeleon from one of the PokéBalls at his waist.

The light from the lizard-like Pokémon's tail revealed more of the tomb. The room was much larger than the other rooms of the basement had been. The treasure could be anywhere.

A snarl was heard.

"Who's there? Are you the Pokémon?" Rick flicked his flashlight from side to side, but saw nothing.

Another snarl. Then the light of the flashlight flickered and went out. Except for Charmeleon's flame-tipped tail, the trio was left in total inky blackness.

"I wanna fight you! I'm gonna capture you!" Rick yelled.

Shut up, you idiot! Eevee felt like saying. But it wouldn't work, because all Rick would hear was "Eevee vee eev!" Eevee decided he wasn't going to go anywhere with this moron and bolted for the stairs.

A pair of vivid yellow eyes flashed, illuminating the darkness for a split second before disappearing into the shadows.

And then, Rick heard the pained squeals of Eevee. The boy jumped and groped around uselessly in the blackness. "Eevee! Eevee!" he cried. Charmeleon was searching as well, but Eevee was nowhere to be found. The squealing stopped abruptly in a moment. The silence returned.

"EEVEE!"

The last thing Rick saw were those yellow eyes, as well as a silvery-blue flash of ghostly fire.
