Hey everyone! Now this story is actually a project I did for my Ancient Civilizations class. Everyone told me it was really good, so I decided to put it up here. This is actually the Greek myth, The Great Bear. I just did it in the main character's, Callisto's point of veiw. I dont think a disclaimer is need for this, so here we go!
Callisto's Monologue
I never used to be this way. I used to be human, a forest maiden. It was a happy, normal life. That is until my life really began. Somehow, I managed to catch the eye of the sky god Zeus. We fell in love and not long after, I had a child, a son named Arcus. All was well until Zeus's wife Hera, the goddess of marriage found out.
Hera flew into a horrible rage, and she descended from Mount Olympus to find me. She found me under a tree, playing with my young son. As soon as I saw her, I cried out in fear; all mortals knew and feared her jealous rages. She yelled her anger at me, but then she wondered aloud in a cruel and mocking voice "Well, let's see how he likes you this way!" All the while I begged the goddess for forgiveness, but it was in vein. My skin became coarse black fur, my hands and feet turned into giant paws with great claws. I was now a bear.
I turned to my son, but he screamed in fear, and the wood nymphs took him away. They were terrified of me now, not knowing that I was still the same on the inside. I tried to stay near my son for a while, but the hunters forced me to hide deep in the woods.
Many years later, while I was wandering the woods, I came across a young hunter with his bow and arrows. Instantly, I knew it was Arcus. When he turned around and saw me, he raised his bow and aimed it at me. I was frozen; I was about to be killed by my own son.
At that moment however, Zeus looked down upon the earth from Mount Olympus. He moved quickly to save me, remembering the young maiden I had once been. He threw me up into the night sky, and then threw Arcus up after me where he also became a bear. Then, we were both turned into stars. When Hera discovered us, she commanded Poseidon, the god of the sea, to forbid us to descend into the ocean with the other stars. We are now known as the Great Bear and the Little Bear constellations.
