Mary-Ann ran into Kristy at lunchtime. She looked kind of sad.
"Hey. Can I sit here?"
"Why," Kristy asked, "you don't need me in your life anymore… you have Dawn"
Mary-Ann sighed.
"Dawn is my stepsister," she told Kristy, "and I love her. She's a great friend but she's not you. You're my best friend and you always will be"
"I dunno," Kristy said sighing
"I DO know," Mary-Ann told her firmly, "was it Dawn that I went to my first PG 13 movie with?"
"No that was me"
"Was it Dawn that made me laugh and feel better after my mother died?"
"That was me too," Kristy acknowledged.
"Is it Dawn's kidney that is inside me," Mary-Ann asked.
Mary-Ann needed a kidney transplant when she was 7 years old. Kristy ended up donating her matching kidney
"Me again," Kristy admitted
"You were always and always will be my best friend"
"But you've been spending so much time with Dawn lately"
"Like I said she's my stepsister but she's not my best friend. YOU are my best friend"
"You promise?"
"Cross my heart"
"Well then can you come over tonight?"
Mary-Ann wrinkled her nose. She had told Dawn she'd see a movie with her tonight.
"What time?"
"How about 7 o'clock?"
"If we can move it up to 8 o'clock that would be better"
"Why?"
"I," Mary-Ann looked down, "I promised Dawn I'd go see a movie with her"
"Okay," Kristy said, "Have fun. See you at 8 o'clock"
"You're not mad?"
"Not at all," Kristy said, "I just needed to know I was still in your life"
"Always," Mary-Ann told her.
"Sisters?"
"Always":
