MOTHER DUCK
Summary: Hikaru feels alone. Drabble.
Disclaimer: Ouran High Host Club is Bisco Hatori's not mine and wishful thinking will not change that.
Hikaru was alone and he was trying to be brave, but every time he thought of Kaoru, he started to shiver. He had never been separated from Kaoru for long, and he didn't know what it was like to be without someone's hand to hold, or not to have someone whisper in his ear telling him that he was loved. He had always felt pity for those who were alone, but now he felt envy. How had they learned to cope without someone that they could always lean on?
Kaoru had said that he was like the mother duck that must push her ducklings into the lake so that they could learn to swim. 'This hurts me too, but I know that it must happen.'
When Hikaru had woken up that morning last week, there was nobody beside him in his bed. There was no poke in the shoulder, or early morning hug. He was on his own. He was swimming, but he felt like he was drowning. All he wanted to do was find mother duck.
Every time Hikaru tried to ask his twin why he had been left to fend for himself, all he got as a reply was 'sorry' in a tone that was so sad that Hikaru felt guilty for making his brother feel such an emotion.
Hikaru had been in a paradise, a beautiful place with high walls around, and trapped inside with him was Kaoru. One day, Kaoru was gone, the walls had crumbled and Hikaru found that he wasn't in a tropical paradise after all, but in a barren desert. So, Hikaru became a desert wanderer hoping to find the centre of his paradise, but Hope didn't stay with him for long. Hope saw something shiny in the distance and ran to chase it. That's when Reality hit him with all its malice. Reality, the bright light that makes the 'what if' disappear showed him that there was no chance that an oasis would appear in the middle of his desert. Soon after his meeting with Reality, Hikaru met with Despair, who convinced him to give up.
Hikaru stopped trying to find the centre of his universe, his mother duck, but he also stopped trying to swim. Hikaru let himself drift to the bottom with his arms outstretched, ready to make anyone or anything his new mother duck, no matter if he loved them like he loved Kaoru, or not.
