"Butterfree use Confusion!", Skye yelled from across the arena. His opponent, a man named Tyler was using a Machoke, which stumbled across the arena. Tyler had raised his Pokemon too well- it couldn't be knocked out, but the continuous use of Confusion and Supersonic had trapped Machoke in an endless state of confusion. The evidence was clear for this in the state the wooden arena floor was in - Machoke's stumbling had caused large dents to appear in many parts of the floor.
Dammit, why won't this guy just quit? He knows I won't so why does he try to win? Skye thought irritably. He looked out at the crowd, a sea of bored spectators who came to watch an exciting tournament between Viridian's strongest trainers, but were now getting up to leave, or staring at their phones.
"I have to keep them here if I want to get my money's worth", Skye muttered under his breath, "How can I wrap this up?"
Just then, without being told, Butterfree charged headfirst into Machoke. It came as a large shock to the crowd, and caught many people's attention; this was the first time Butterfree had made physical contact!
Skye got the message. "Alright Butterfree, use Frustration!" he shouted. Butterfree charged the opponents Machoke with gusto, eliciting a cheer from the crowd. Machoke finally fell, and didn't get up.
A voice came on over the PA. "The victor of the first round of the annual Viridian trainer's tournament is Skye DeGrove. Victor, please come to the registration desk for your prize."
The crowd didn't give much of a reaction. Some yawned, some cheered. There were mixed emotions all around due to the length of the battle.
Skye returned Butterfree to his pokeball and left the arena, heading towards the registration desk. When he arrived he was greeted by a young lady who obviously didn't want to be there. She made Skye sign some forms and handed him his money - a whopping 1 cent.
Skye placed the penny on the desk and said "Excuse me miss I think you made a mistake. There's only one cent in this bag, and I bet 50 dollars on that battle. " The lady working at the desk didn't lift her head from her papers, but simply said "Just register for another battle. The challenger's bets are not returned to them, instead they must get consecutive wins, doubling their prize money each time."
Skye scowled. "Well you could have told me that before I wanted my money!" He exclaimed.
"Or you could have read the rules before entering. " The lady shot back. Skye grabbed the penny off the desk, spun on his heel and left, shouting "I don't even need your stupid tournament!"
