The watchman had not done his duties properly that night.
A thief had slipped by him into the Royal Apartments.
The young thief noiselessly entered a lavishly furnished chamber. The pale moonlight made her coffee-brown eyes black in comparison, and her black hair, became the blue-black of a raven's wing. Her lips smirked as she saw the overly ornate gold trimming on the wall and jewels that glistened throughout the room.
"Typical Denlieffen Noble." Frowning, she thought, "Even their rooms have to have a 'proper appearance'."
Her nimble fingers opened a gold-and-velvet box that contained the crown jewels, and hastily snatched a flamboyant gold necklace set with star sapphires, glistening diamonds, winking rubies, and shimmering emeralds.
Pocketing it, she creaked open a gold-trimmed window and began her long descent down the withered ivy on the castle walls.
She tore through the streets, racing against time to get back before dawn.
