Just a sudden story that popped into my head, thought I'd write it down before I lost it. I don't think the pacing is very well done but will see. Also I think Matthew has a little OOC moments but...yeah. Anyway enjoy! Review equals cookies!
Matthew loved both of his parents. A lot. Almost every time he met one of his father's old acquaintances of friends they would always tell him how much he looked like his father. Which he did love. Really. Just, sometimes he found it hard to connect with his dad; they were similar in a lot of ways, especially with their generally quiet disposition. But it can be pretty hard having a meaningful conversation with someone when both of you are sitting their thinking most of the time and give small/short answers.
But his mom, now she was something else entirely. She could walk into a room, look at both of them and immediately know what they were thinking. She was amazing. She was a great mom to have, she gave the best hugs in the world and she could sit there and wait for you to tell her what was on your mind even if she had already figured it out.
He always felt proud when he was compared to his father, but he never felt prouder than when he was compared to his mom. The first similarity that was first pointed out was by Uncle Felix, he had sat at eye level with Matthew looked at him for just a moment, smiled and said "You have your mom's eyes."
Every now and then someone else would notice a similarity. One of my mum's friends, Pier, had come by for a visit when Matthew was thirteen and watched him train for a while. Matthew had overheard him telling Uncle Garret that "He fights with the same spirit and flare as his mom."
He sometimes he even felt himself siding with his mom, not because she was always right, and their many times when she would make a decision out of anger, he just always tended to side with her. The worst had probably been when Uncle Felix disappeared, his mom clearly knew more than she was saying (although dad suspected Kraden and Pier may have known something as well, they hide it much better than mom who had no problem acknowledging she knew something but would not say a word) of course this had cause the two of them to have a really horrible fight. After they had finally stopped fighting and dad had stormed off somewhere, Matthew had run in to find his mom sitting on their bad looking very worn out. So he had just sat there with her holding her hand for as long as he could stay awake for.
Before he and his dad left for Mount Aleph, his dad and mom had gotten into a bad fight, his mom screaming that she knew what he was up to. Of course now Matthew realized what she meant.
His dad didn't yell all that much and it really surprised when he did; his dad was usually the broody kind of mad or letting your anger out on monsters sort of mad. Although Uncle Garret used to say "Marriage yelling really isn't yelling it's just another form of communication between spouses."
Anyway, he was sure they made up last night judging by the look on their faces the next morning.
When he did leave for his own "adventure" he was really sad that his dad wasn't there to say good bye, although he guessed he did in his own sort of way. But what bothered him the most was that he didn't really get to say good bye to his mom. He did get to say good bye to her when he left for the cabin but it wasn't the same when he left for this big adventure to who knows where.
Of course moments like when he met Briggs who immediately recognized him as his mother's son tended to ease the separation. And believing his mother is very proud of him always helped as well.
But what it all came down to was the Matthew was a mommy's boy.
