I was recently re-watching 'Bedtime Stories' and the Crossroads Demon said something that got me to thinking. In this story, Dean and Bela have some sort of relationship and he and Sam know about her deal.
Dean had accepted his fate. He didn't really like the idea of going to hell, but it was better than Sammy being dead. Sam had been his responsibility for a long time and he wasn't going to let him die on his watch.
He just never planned on falling for somebody like Bela Talbot. He kept telling himself it was just a little harmless fun, just another pretty girl, something to pass the time until his year was up. So he had a tendency to lie to himself.
One night Bela woke up screaming and as he held her, she told him about how her parents died, how it was her fault, about the abuse, and the girl with the red eyes who promised to stop it. So he made a promise to her and to himself that he would try to save her.
It was too late to save him. He knew that. Saving him would kill Sam and that wasn't worth it. But maybe, just maybe he and Sam could save Bela one more time.
It was Sam who discovered the loophole that saved her. He was recounting his conversation with the Crossroads Demon when something she said suddenly clicked in his brain. She mentioned that Dean was an adult and made his deal knowing what would happen. Bela had made her deal without really knowing what would happen.
It was a long shot, but it worked. Bela got out of her deal and promised that she would save Dean in return.
