Under a canopy of stars, Kate stood alone, sinking into the sand slowly. She took a deep breath and inhaled the ocean air. She was often alone with her thoughts, letting them tear at her brain, as a million questions came up with no answers. She turned and headed up the beach a few feet and sat down. No matter how involved she was with her other Castaways, she still felt alone. Her secrets weighed her down and as much as she treid to push them away, they came right back at full force. When she slept, she was plagued with nightmares, so sleep was never a comfort with her...just a painful ritual she dealt with every night, she slept to be strong for the next day...but emotionally it only made her weaker.
She sighed then stared up at the stars, picking out random constellations in her mind. Suddenly she head footsteps, but she didn't even bother to turn around and see who it was.
Soon enough, the person was sitting next to her. She looked out of the corner of her eye to see Claire.
"Awfully cold and lonely over here." Claire said in her singsongish voice.
"I like it". Kate said softly. She turned to look at Claire. "Where's Aaron?"
"He's asleep, Locke's there so I figured I'd come down here to join you."
"Ah, he let you walk down here?" Kate laughed. Claire smiled.
"You alright?" Claire asked.
"Just thinking..." Kate said. She sighed again.
"You can talk to me you know. It'll stay between us, I promise."
Kate thought to herself for a moment. She and Claire did have a special bond, Kate did deliver her baby and since then they had a special closeness neither could describe.
"I guess a part of me is terrified, terrified of getting of this island...terrified of what happens to me. Life in prison? a Life on the run? I'm tired of running...for once I somehwat have a place...but I'm still terrified for the day a helicopter flies over...or a plane and while everyone's cheering and laughing in victory, I'm sitting there plotting my next move..." She stopped, looking to her feet and taking a big breath. "And then a part of me has this feeling...this feeling like I know we're not going anywhere."
Claire thought for a moment too, then she rested her hand on top of Kate's. "If It makes you feel any better, I'll testify for you in any way if I can. I'll fight to let them know you're a good person, I'll tell them how you helped me when I needed someone the most, how strong and brave you are. And what a good friend you are too."
Kate smiled. She had often forgotten what it was like to have a true friend. "Thank You." She said, putting her hand over Claire's and squeezing it gently.
It was something Kate needed to hear, she felt wanted and cared about, she felt like she had a place. For once in her life, she felt like she belonged.
