He sees it coming

I know he does

He's smart

He always has been

Even so

I don't see it coming

The bullet from my gun that sinks into his flesh

I look into his eyes

I wish I hadn't

But he at least deserves this

My gaze as his life slips away

The look of betrayal

So clear on his face

I don't see the hand

Extended from my own body

To push him backwards off the pier

And he falls

Mouth gone slack

Hand reached out

Maybe to reach for me

Blood fills the water

As my best friend leaves me forever

Not able to stand it

I blink

And he's gone
