Of Love and Duty

I sit cross legged on the tatami,
the shoji doors are open as they always are,
to invite the wind,
to breathe fresh air,
to bathe myself in sunlight.

They come in hordes unbidden,
blocking the wind,
hampering the fresh air,
stifling the warm sunlight.

Some come running others are stumbling
while others carefully or frightfully enters...

First comes the young one,
his eyes shining, his smile unwavering,
he asks, won't you join us and play?

Second comes the loud one,
he is grinning and heartily laughing,
he asks, where are the ladies, the singing and the drinking?

Third comes the mysterious one,
his hands steady, his eyes closed, his mind open,
he asks, do you see the dark cloud you have hidden?

Fourth comes the shy one,
he comes slowly with his fingers all fidgety,
he asks, It's such a pity I don't have money can you spare any?

Fifth comes the gentle one,
his face is kind, his smile is soft, his gait quite sad,
he asks, I have gone astray, please can I go on my way?

I smile at the first,
laugh at the second,
muse at the third,
be kind to the fourth,
and frown at the fifth...

I adore the first,
I admire the second,
I respect the third,
I understand the fourth,
but most of all I loved the fifth...

I say yes to the first,
to the second, the third and the fourth...
I say nay to the fifth with my teeth in a grit.
He is unhappy, lonely and nothing really fits...

I understand him the most,
I respect him the most,
I see what he sees, hears what he speaks
but I ignore what he says and sends him away.

He neglects what I say,
Turns and runs away,
I understand but still I get my right hand man,
I ask, do we have to slay?

I knew the answer but I will still ask,
Maybe we can bend, tweak a few odds and ends,
Here is a man who I rely to keep to my word,
a sanity to get by, a will into my world...

We have a rule not to be disobeyed,
they may seem harsh, decrepit and decayed,
but what would we be, he says in dismay,
to treat one above to the order we have laid?

I turn away, my heart silently screams,
I clamp it down and say in between,
breaths that have come too far it may seem,
"Go do what you must", I sorrow every dream...
