Pretty strange and probably makes no sense. Set before The Faceless Ones.

Skulduggery felt somewhat confused as his senses slowly sharpened. He had no idea where he was, or what he had been doing prior to this. He slowly became aware of the fact that he was lying in a bed, which made him all the more confused. He didn't sleep- so why was he on a bed? And who's bed was it?

He felt a cold sensation on his head, and looked up to see his 14 year old partner Valkyrie pressing an cold flannel against his skull.

"Hello." She smiled.

"What?"

Valkyrie frowned. "Um… hello. It's not a foreign concept."

"Where am I?"

"In bed?" Valkyrie suggested.

"Whilst we're stating the obvious, your hair's a mess." Valkyrie scowled, and reached for a hairbrush lying on a table.

"Oh!" Skulduggery realised. "This is your room, isn't it?"

"You think you'd know that by now." Valkyrie tugged the brush through her hair.

"Don't blame me! I'm injured!"

"Are you?"

"As I'm in bed with a cold compress and I can't remember what happened, I'm guessing yes."

"You passed out, so you probably hit your head. That's about it."

"That's unusual. I didn't know I could be unconscious. But why did I pass out?" Valkyrie bit her lip and her eyes sparkled.

"What are you laughing- oh." If Skulduggery had eyes, they would have widened.

"We were-"

"I remember perfectly now, thank you." Skulduggery replied coolly.

"You could have told me! I mean, I could have figured a way around it…"

"I'm going to get up now." He continued, ignoring her.

"It's nothing to be asha-"

"Shush time now."

"It must have been pretty terrifying. I imagine it was hard for you."

"Valkyrie Cain! Stop it."

"Although, as you have fought Vengous and Serpine with ease, I wouldn't have said hard to the point of fainting."

"I did not faint, I passed out." Skulduggery snapped.

"There is no difference."

"There is. Women in books from the 1800's faint. Men pass out."

"Good thing I was there when you 'passed out', then."

"Time to go!" He swung his legs out of bed, and walked over to the windowsill. Valkyrie followed.

"I only have one question."

"Oh God."

"… just when were you going to tell me you were afraid of elevators?"
