The Distant Meadow
Disclaimers:
Characters belong to Paramount, the story belongs to me. Now if
they would just listen to us we could all get along.
Rating: G, I think I don't really get it.

The Distant Meadow
I'm
walking by the park again today. I see you there sometimes. I
often wonder what you are thinking about. I wonder if you are
thinking the same as me.
I
don't come here very often now, I don't need to, the
memories come on their own now, but sometimes I like to come. To
sit in the shade of the willow tree you used to love.
Every
time I come I see you walking along the path we used to take.
Some times that is why I come, others it is why I stay away.
I
am sitting under that tree today. I used to live here in memories
until I realised that they are no use if you can't look to
the future.
I
see you now; you are walking towards me. To me you look like a
Goddess with the sun lighting up your face.
You
sit down besides me but you say nothing and I say nothing either.
We sit like that for a long time. Then you speak,
"Chakotay,
about what you asked me five years ago,"
I
do not reply it hurts too much, but you continue anyway,
"They
were the words I most wanted to hear you say. I should have run
towards you, but instead I ran away,"
Again
I do not speak for I know if I open my mouth I will break down
and cry like no man ever should.
"I
didn't know what to say,"
This
time I do open my mouth to speak,
"You
could have said yes," I say, the words coming out as barely
a whisper, the sound almost gets lost in the wind.
"I
don't know how to say this Chakotay but I"
I
know what you are trying to say but I want to hear you say it
anyway.
"I
love you,"
You
finally say it. You look away embarrassed.
"I'mI'm
so sorry,"
I've
seen you suffer long enough so I silence you by taking your hand
and drawing you to me.
"Marry
me,"
I
whisper somehow knowing this time you will not run away.
"Yes,"
Came
your whispered reply. You have made a young man very happy today
and I sense that you know that.
I
see a young teenage couple running through the distant meadow and
I can tell they are laughing.
Suddenly
I laugh and so do you so we jump up and run through the meadow
like the young couple who we know will be as happy in five years
time as we are today.
