All right people, this is the prequel to 'Crystal Blue Sapphire Ice.' Again, Hige is OOC. It's just to serious for him, I swear. Anyways, 'Sapphire Ice' got a fair response, (thank you SOOO much!!) so I decided I'd put this up. Poor Kiba. But he's got Hige to take care of him. (I don't own Wolf's Rain. But you knew that.)

I'll Take Care Of You

The dark haired boy in front of me stumbles suddenly.

I pick up my pace,

til I'm beside him.

That little stumble has me nervous.

He never talks much,

but he's been even quieter than usual.

He stumbles again,

and falls this time.

I catch him quickly,

afraid he'll hurt himself.

He's breathing hard,

his face is flushed,

and those sparkling blue eyes are dull.

"Kiba?" He doesn't answer.

Worried, I ease him to the ground

and press a hand against his skin.

Frowning, I pull back.

He's much warmer than he should be.

A fever like that can't be good.

I pick him up gently,

because I know we're not safe here.

I carry him into a nearby abandoned building,

they shouldn't find us here, I hope.

A soft whimper catches my attention,

I turn back to him,

but he's fast asleep.

I'm mad at myself.

I should have realized.....

How could I have missed it?

I shouldn't have let him get this sick but,

I hadn't noticed.

And I said my nose was so good.

After some looking around,

I find an old blanket

and cover him up.

Then I settle down next to him,

knowing it's going to be a long night

for both of us.

He whimpers again,

and the trembling body presses closer to me,

subconsciously seeking comfort.

Uncertainly I start stroking his back

and, fortunately, he calms.

I don't know what I'd have done if he hadn't.

Clearly I'm staying right where I am tonight.

Tomorrow I'll have to find him some water,

if nothing else.

Although the thought of leaving him alone like this,

defenseless,

worries me.

But I don't have to think about that quite yet.

Because right now,

he just needs his sleep,

and I'll watch over him.
