The car just had to break down right in the middle of nowhere, in the rain, no less. Dave groaned and Rory jumped as he heard thunder in the distance.
"I guess we'll just stay here until the rain stops, and we can find some help." He looked at his watch. "That will probably be tomorrow morning. I guess we'll be late to the game. You okay?"
Rory had jumped as lightning flashed across the sky. "Yeah, I'm fine." He said nervously.
"Are you afraid of thunderstorms?" Dave asked, placing his hand on Rory's and turning in his seat as much as he could, despite the steering wheel on his lap.
He nodded and tensed, hearing thunder one again.
"Get into the backseat." Dave fumbled with the steering wheel, and after finally getting it unlocked, maneuvered himself to so he was sitting next to his boyfriend in the backseat of the car.
"Thinking of doing that are we?"
Dave smiled and pulled at the divider in the seats and pulled a couple of blankets out of the trunk and some food, meant for tomorrow's football game.
"You keep blankets in the trunk of your car?" Rory laughed.
"Just in case. They came in handy tonight, didn't they? It's going to start getting cold before long." He pulled a blanket and pulled it around his shoulders and held the other one out across his lap. "Come here."
Rory didn't hesitate. He climbed into Dave's lap, allowing the bigger boy to pull the blanket around him, and took the sandwich Dave had handed him. Thunder shook the car, and Rory buried his face in Dave's chest, clutching at the blankets.
"Shh... It's ok. I've got you." Dave brought both arms up to almost cradle Rory, comforting him, kissing his hair. "Nothing's going to happen to you."
Rory relaxed a little, and looked up into those comforting brown eyes and leaned up to place a chaste kiss on the football player's lips. " I love you."
"I love you too." Dave took one hand and stroked the smaller boy's cheek.
Rory leaned further into the wonderful, warm, body and tensed again, as the storm progressed, the rain becoming harder, thunder shaking the car and lightning making shadows in the sky. He wasn't as afraid as he usually was, curled in his bed, blankets drawn around him. He knew this time that nothing was going to happen, that the man he loves will be there for him.
So they just sat there, Dave cuddling Rory to his chest, and Rory laying his head on Dave's shoulder. Until they both fell asleep, thinking that this road trip was better than they ever imagined.
