Mattie, Cogburn and LeBoeuf continue on through the Choctaw terrain. Cogburn breathes noisily through his whiskey soaked windpipes as LeBoeuf tells old war stories.

"Look!" says an alarmed Mattie.

In the distance riding towards them they see a sharply dressed black man moving at a reasonable pace, staring right back at them.

"Is that negro riding a horse?" Cogburn slurs.

They slow to a stop as they meet the strange site on the trail. The man is around 50 years of age with a strange fire in his eye and resolve in his posture.

"What are you doin' out here boy?" Leboeuf demands.

"Just taking in the sights. Yourself?" replies the man through his half grey beard. He notices LeBoeuf slowly put his hand on his revolver. He stays calm and doesn't move.

Leboeuf is suspicious of this man. Too strange for a lone negro dressed so well to be riding around Indian territory, armed. He could be connected to the Pepper Gang. Cogburn however is not as suspicious as he is curious and intrigued.

"Let's try that again. State your purpose out here in these parts" Leboeuf says as he draws his revolver.

Before he could finish the sentence the man shoots LeBoeuf's revolver right out of his hands. "Easy white boy" he says with a smile.

"That man is a Texas ranger and he's a U.S. marshall! Stand down!" screams a panicking Mattie. Cogburn remains calm and continues to observe this strange man. He slowly pushes back his jacket to reveal his badge.

The man twirls his revolver and holsters it. He gets off of his horse and removes his hat.

"I am a bounty hunter on the trail of Jack Skinner. He's been hiding in these parts after the murder of three men in Kansas." He reaches to his pocket and pulls out a piece of paper. With a smirk on his confident face he walks past Leboeuf and hands the paper to Cogburn, Leboeuf still speechless from the whole scenario.

"It's a bounty for Jack Skinner. Contracted to De-Jango Freeman. That's some fast shooting De-Jango." Says Cogburn

"Django. The D is silent. Fastest gun in the south, including Texas" He replies as he looks at LeBoeuf. "I ran out of food yesterday. I have money if you gentlemen are willing to sell me some food and perhaps some of that whiskey I smell."

"We're just about to set up camp. Join us" Replies Cogburn. Lebeouf is infuriated but still cannot bring up any words.
