A young girl was in the woods searching for firewood amid the deep snow. Her father, the town drunk was unconscious in their frozen hut and as should never happen, the young girl held more responsibility than she deserved. As she struggled to peel a large branch away from a frozen tree, her numb fingers slipped and she fell back, soaking her wool dress and scattering her branches. Letting out a cry of frustration she wailed at the sky "Why does the world hate me so?!" Not expecting an answer she moved to the next tree to see if any branches would come loose. But, from behind a pale purple light was growing brighter.
A soft voice sounded, "The world doesn't hate you, it just needed to know you needed help. There is always someone around to ease your pain dearest girl. I can sense your heart is pure. Tell me, what is your name?" The fairy was dressed in flowing purple robes and had her hair up in an elegant bun. She was known as Jolene, sister to Tinker Bell and former student of the Blue Fairy. Having completed her training under the Blue Fairy, she had risen to the status of fairy godmother. An excellent fairy godmother, she had found and healed hundreds of generations of young girl's troubles. She was beautiful both inside and out.
Finally, one year, while helping a girl out of depression, as the girl was recovering she was killed in a random act of violence. She died happy but the Purple Fairy was inconsolable. Handing in a resignation to the Blue Fairy, she departed from the fairy order and went to find girls to help on her own.
And so she found this young girl in the woods fetching firewood for her drunken father. The girl was young, only 15 winters and pure as a summers breeze. Her name was "Leigh, my name is Leigh" the girl marveled at the fairy's beauty having never seen such a wondrous creature in her life. "Would you like to come with me to find happiness?" The Purple Fairy asked. The girl, Leigh, hesitated but, she knew that happiness was something worth finding. It was one of the last lessons her mother had taught her before she was killed by her husband, Leigh's father. "Yes"
"Take me away"
And so the Purple Fairy cast an enchantment on Leigh and a pale purple most flew from her wand and hovered in front of Leigh before bouncing off into the woods. Following it, the two found themselves on their way to Leigh's hut. And the most stopped in front of a scrap of parchment and the quill on her father's table. Purple words shimmered on the parchment. "Father, I'm sorry but I cannot live this way anymore. I refuse to grow up to be married to another one of these villagers who would want me for sex and children. I'm sorry but I'm leaving. I'm going to find sanctuary with the fairies of this realm. When you have finally overcome your drinking problem, come find me. But until then, don't. I will be far gone by the time you read this knowing how much you drank, and I beg of you not to follow me. Know that this house was never my home and that we both failed mother. But I believe that we can honor her by becoming truly happy in life. Please try. If not for me or mother, then try at least for yourself.
Leigh"
As the girl read what the enchantment had written for her, she realized that it was all true what was there. She just needed the courage to trace it in ink and make it real. She turned to the Purple Fairy. "The enchantment shows the road to happiness right? Is the road to happiness having the courage to take control of my life?"
Jolene beamed. "You are so smart Leigh that is what it means. It's your choice however."
A small smiled danced across Leigh's lips, "I've made my decision. I hate this life and I refuse to stay here." She picked up the quill and quickly filled in the words with ink sealing her decision with herself. And the Purple Fairy let out a small breath and laid a hand on her heart. The girl was something special she knew. But what would she do in her life?
Leigh turned to Jolene and said, "Let's get out of here. I don't want him to wake up while we're here. I only need this bag," Leigh bent down to pluck a small bag from underneath her cot and straightened up. "Let's go" she repeated. The Purple Fairy smiled and flew out of the hut and into the forest, Leigh following briskly. As they traveled into the world, they talked about both their lives. The Purple Fairy was impressed by the way Leigh had always fought for her and her father's survival. Likewise Leigh was impressed by the way Jolene had never stopped working for for the good of the abused in the world. Not always girls, she had helped a few boys as well. As they became closer, they realized that the other was the kind of person they had always wanted to spend their lives with. And it was beautiful. Unconsciously the Purple Fairy found herself leading Leigh to the order of the fairies like she had whenever she had made a huge discovery. And when she vocalized this realization Leigh's face lit up.
"Can I meet the rest of the fairies?! I would love to see your kind. You speak of them so highly they must be amazing!" She said excitedly. And as the Purple Fairy envisioned Leigh around the other fairies, a pulse of magic hit her. And a prophecy she hadn't thought of in centuries came back to her.
One of pale coloring
Innocent but abused
Found reaching for the ice
And looking for home
It is she who shall be next
Complement to the loved but left
It is she who shall ascend
Red as apples and white as snow
The healer girl from the meadow
That's why Leigh was calling to the Purple Fairy. She was next. Jolene's face lit up and she whispered to Leigh, "give me moment to talk to the others," and Leigh nodded sweetly. The Purple Fairy zipped up into the fairy world and called a meeting of all available fairies. While she had left the order, she was respected as one of the oldest and kindest of fairies. Hundreds of fairies came of all colors but as she examined them, not one was the white of snow. Perfect. "Fairies, thank you for answering my calls. I acknowledge that I am not fully one of you but that you have come speaks volumes. It has been common knowledge that there has been a confusing prophecy about a new fairy ... And I believe that I have found her." The fairies all turned to one another and murmurs flew across the hall. The Blue Fairy rose as the purple Fairy allowed the murmurs to continue knowing that the news was big stuff.
"What makes you think you have found her Jo?" The Blue Fairy asked using the Purple Fairy's familiar. Jolene waited a moment as the Yellow and Orange Fairies approached. As the heads of the fairy order, she knew they needed to be present. Jolene then proceeded to explain her day's discoveries. "It all makes sense" she said at the end.
"The name Leigh," the Orange Fairy said, it can mean healer, but in other lands, Arendelle and Oz, it can mean from the meadow. "
"And the lines 'red as apples and white as snow'," the Yellow Fairy realized, "her skin was pale but her cloak, red."
"And the lines about abuse and home, she had an abusive father and wanted to feel at home and safe," the Purple Fairy said excitedly.
"And you believe she is your complementary woman?" The Blue Fairy asked quietly. "Because you are clearly the 'loved but left'. Is she?"
"I believe so, yes" Jolene murmured. "We are alike but different,"
"So, what does the part about ascension mean?" The Orange Fairy asked quietly. They all thought for a moment, Jolene already with an idea. It didn't take long for the Blue Fairy to murmur ascension before stating in a louder voice, "It means to become a fairy doesn't it,"
It took neither the Orange nor Yellow Fairies by surprise. Jolene nodded the affirmative.
The Blue Fairy turned to the masses fairies and called for order. She explained the different parts of the prophecy and of the Purple Fairy's findings. And then she revealed the ascension of a human to fairy. And silence fell. And agreements were shared.
"We believe that with the combined forces of the fairies, we can successfully and safely make the transition from human to fairy with this girl, Leigh. Are you with me and the fairy council?!" And the fairy world rose as one as Jolene zipped back to Leigh to explain everything.
And Leigh loved the idea.
And the fairies massed in the Enchanted Forest.
And the wands were pointed at the girl.
And the smell of sunlight, moonlight and starlight filled the air as the sun says eyes to shift and night and day traded places back and forth in the span of minutes. But the transition was made.
And where the human girl Leigh had stood now hovered Leigh, the White Fairy.
Years passed and the White Fairy grew in popularity and status, kindness and love. Two hundred years after her ascension, she was made part of the council next to the Blue, Orange, Yellow and Fairies. And she finally kissed Jo. And they lived happily ever after.
