This Is The First Thing - A Falling Skies Fanfic
Hal Mason's fingers trembled as he picked up the photograph he'd kept in his jacket pocket since he and Karen had found that old camera. The coloring had faded a bit and the edges were worn, but he grazed his fingertips across the image as if it still were in prime condition. He took a pen and, pressing the photo flat against the table, scribbled her name in the white underneath the picture in his characteristically sloppy handwriting.
Karen Nadler.
Hal frowned. A simple name didn't do much justice to who she was. He thought for a moment, before scribbling a simple message underneath.
She is my best friend, and I have never felt more strongly for any person in my life. Find her. Or I will.
He'd never been good with words. Hal was a young man of action, and this situation was no different. She was gone, and he would rather die a gruesome death at the claws of the skitters than lose her forever. His father had pleaded with him to see reason, that Hal was more likely to die than to single handedly save Karen. But if they didn't do anything soon, he was going to take things into his hands.
Satisfied with his work, Hal held the photo to his lips briefly before placing it in the upper corner of the board, using a bright orange tack to keep it in place. There were many pictures of the missing tacked alongside hers, but Karen's wide smile and joyous blue eyes stood out from the others.
Ben happened to walk by at that time, stopping to see what his brother was doing. He glanced at the picture and smirked slightly. "Cheesy," he remarked with a snort, pointing at the image: Karen grinning, ultimately happy, Hal's lips pressed to her cheek and eyes unable to focus on the camera when such a beautiful girl was in his arms. It was Hal's favorite picture of them, and he'd spent a lot of time with it in the recent wake of her capture.
He turned to glare at his brother, fists clenching, fingernails digging into the soft flesh of his palms. If the younger boy hadn't been recently saved from the skitters, Hal might have punched him.
"It's not funny."
Ben seemed as if he was about to make a sarcastic remark, when his face suddenly grew somber as he realized his older brother's seriousness.
"Hey, man, I'm sorry," he apologized, clamping a hand on Hal's shoulder. "We'll get her back."
"Damn right we will," he said. "Because if they don't, I will."
He looked back at the photo, touching it. "I'm not giving up, K. I promise."
This is the first thing I thought
This is the last thing that I want
You were the first one I loved
You were the first love I lost
