You are the only one, the only one, the only one

I am the chosen one, the chosen one, the chosen one for you

I am the chosen one, I froze your lungs, your breath tells me the truth

"Hate Machine" by The Neighborhood

Over the quiet hum of the waves, Lapis is the one who breaks their long silence.

The one who starts it, over five-thousand years ago.

"Pearl?" she asks softly, almost a whisper. "I-I… I don't understand."

There's a rustle in the sand as Pearl turns over to look at the blue gem, dark blue eyes shining underneath the pale gaze of moonlight.

"What is it, Lapis?" The pale gem says.

"I need you to tell me, how…" The words trail off, Lapis sits up, a gleam of light runs across her gemstone. "…tell me how to love you."

Pearl is left suspended in a state of disbelief.

Pearl shifts in her spot, sitting up as well. Every grain of sand burns itself into her ivory skin, a searing reminder of the war and the inevitable truth. The silence is palpable, thick between them and the lack of response is too much for Lapis to bear any longer.

"You know what it's fine, I should have never said anything." The words are ground out through clenched teeth.

Lapis motions to get up and leave but Pearl is faster. Grabbing the blue gem by the wrist and pulling back down to the sand. Straddling her dress, the renegade keeps her locked into position. Wrists bound by pale hands, usually pristine peach-colored hair now a haphazard mess of strands pointing in every direction.

They're both silent for several long, torturous, seconds. Both unwillingly to give into the other, but Lapis Lazuli's resolve crumbles and she bites her tongue. Not ready to spill tears. Not ready to look weak.

"Lapis I—"

"Save it!" She bites. "It's her, isn't it? It's always been her and it'll always be."

The words strike a chord deep within Pearl's chest, a feeling she had yet discovered. It thrums with fury and she feels ashamed.

This is guilt.

Hesitantly, she places a soft hand to Lapis' cheek, testing the waters. There's no immediate retaliation, but when the blue gem sharply turns her head away, Pearl goes further, closing the space between them. Lapis' lips are soft like velvet; she easily melts into the kiss. It's gentle and chaste.

Pearl pulls back after a minute; stunned silence hangs in the atmosphere. Letting Lapis go, she gets up and makes her way back to the base.

Notes: This was written in response to the lack of pearl/lapis interactions on the show and my sudden love for them.

Basically, consider this an exploration into their past as well as what kind of relationship they would have with my own twists added. Each chapter will correspond with some event/period of time or an episode.
