bonfire –01
I remembered the first time I saw him.
Mum had thought it would be such a great idea for me to play with kids my own age, why not start with the boy right next door? Dad couldn't help but agree. That's how I'd found myself face to face with him for the first time.
Curly, brown hair covering eyes that looked cold even for the dull face of a spoiled 4-year old. I had stared right back. Shallow pool blue met impassable slate grey. I blinked. He smirked.
Not much has changed.
"What do you want Jason." I didn't move from my position on the bed, not even bothering to look up from my book.
"Why what do you think Charlie bear?"
I honestly didn't care.
I let the barb linger, knowing the best solution was none at all. I didn't play his games any more than he bothered to try starting them these days. Ignoring Jason was subduing him.
I turned the page.
"Remember when your cousin Frank came over and it like," he tried again, pitching his voice mockingly and I rolled my eyes when I heard the tell-tale crush of the beanbag chair as he sat, "totally changed your life."
"It was Frankie."
"What was that Char?"
I let out a loose breath, he always could rile me up easily.
"I said her name is Frankie, Jazz."
Good thing annoyance was a two way street with us. I felt one corner of my mouth lift in triumph as he visibly bristled.
"Alright Chuck," Yep, two way street. "I was just coming to tell you that my cousin's coming out to Seaview too."
I finally looked up from my book to see him towering over me. Funny how that used to make me feel protected. Now I had to fight back the urge to drop my gaze. The heart battering in my chest was the only thing that didn't change.
"And why should I care?"
"Because just like Frankie, Jake will probably change something with his arrival too."
The way he said that made me finally turn back to the pages of my book, forcing out a nonchalant sigh.
"Hopefully it's a good change then, you could certainly use it. I just don't know what it has to do with me."
Jason chuckled and I felt my heart tug once more in my chest as a fleeting look passed over his face, the same one which had made me forget about missing my most awaited movie premier.
"Charlie, that's why I came to tell you." he smiled devastatingly, "If something affects my life, it'll have everything to do with you."
note: yes the jake mentioned in this chapter is nowhere jake, yes all the chapters will probably be this short, yes the other girls will come in later, yes this is the nowhere boys/sleepover club crossover nobody asked for. its also the outburst of my childhood feelings so expect sentimentality lmao. like comment and subscribe if ur also unable to move on
