Dammit, Babs, why won't you let me in?

I had a dream once.

I dream about fighting a lot. Keeping the peace is my job by day. Knocking sense into the idiots who disrupt it is my mission at night. Given that, it isn't strange that my resting hours are taken up with dreams of the same fight. That's what made it so heartbreakingly realistic.

As I leapt off the corner of the building, I felt the jumpline tighten. The wind blew in my face, slapping against aching muscles as I began my swing, the apartment window just a few short blocks away.

The clouds above the city were breaking up in the wind; the few that remained were tinged with the faint pink light that meant that dawn was just around the corner. Suddenly, your voice rang in my ear.

"Three muggings and a drug deal foiled. One gang headquarters targeted. Not bad for a night's work, Former Boy Wonder," you reported into my earpiece. I could hear the smile in your voice and I couldn't help the grin that split my face ear-to-ear in response.

"I'm calling it a night, Babs," I replied. "I'm only a couple of blocks from home now." We cut communications and, minutes later, I landed on the fire escape outside my apartment. I lifted the sash, slid inside, and there you were.

Waiting for me.

You had that gorgeous smile on your face, the one I used to see beside me almost nightly as you leapt heedlessly into the wind, the one that I always wished could be for me alone. This time, the smile was for me, and it told me all those things that I've always wanted to hear from your lips. How proud you are of me. How good a job I do.

How much you love me.

And then I woke up.

I had a dream I was your hero.

Dammit.

I love you.
