A/N: My first fanfic, I'd really appreciate constructive criticism. I know my writing and grammar isn't very good so I'm currently looking for a beta-reader. Till then, I'm doing my best to make it easy to read and understand. Forgive me if it isn't.

Disclaimer: This is going to be the only disclaimer I'm putting up so I don't have to repeat it again and again. Don't own any of the newsies (Racetrack, Spot, Jack Kelly, David, Mush, Blink, Snitch, Bumlets, etc) or any of the adult characters (Denton, Medda).

"Now, when I created the world..." –Pulitzer (Newsies)

Prologue

Pulitzer High had, at some point after its establishment, been revered as one of the best in the nation. Decades passed and along with its deteriorating structure its prestigious reputation diminished. When the founder, newspaper tycoon Pulitzer himself, died, he left no mention of the school in his will. At first, parents supported the school money-wise, but their once passionate pride and interest left as their children graduated. New parents were proud but counted on teachers and older parents too much. This caused lower salaries and, as a result, most teachers left and less qualified ones took their place. The rest stayed because of their love for the school, but even they retired or died. Like any other school, Pulitzer High went through its catastrophes. Bomb threats during the World Wars, fires, teacher strikes, etc. It didn't matter how big or how small, all events contributed to the school's reputation. The change was gradual and took years. In the end, the school turned public.

The school became an alternative to those who either had no other place to go or who had the bad luck of it being the closest school. Physically, it had an imposing structure that appealed to parents. It made them feel better to think that their kids were going to such a stern looking school. Like any other school it had it's problems but it really wasn't very bad. If you kept your head down and did the work, you could escape. But of course there are always those unfortunate souls stuck in the middle of the chaos.
