"You ever seen a baby with so much hair?" Asked the brand new mother. Inuyasha didn't reply, but he examined the black ringlet curled around his finger. He stroked the curly hair back from the infant's brow so he could examine the child's face clearly. The baby's eyes weren't anywhere in the realm of focused but they looked up to their father's face between long squinty blinks.
That's right. He had fathered this chubby, squirmy, noisy little creature that he had kept cradled in his elbow since Sango had passed him off from Kagome to himself. He had helped make this tiny being, and now he held him without any intention of putting him down.
He would have been happy with his family complete at just Kagome, but she wanted a child and he grew to want a child.
It still surprised him, how indescribable he felt to look down into a child's eyes, and see a hazy mirror of his own reflecting back. He was terrified and exuberant, while his instincts to protect the child and their mother were raging at full force. At the same time... the world only consisted of the three of them at that moment. It was quiet, and so damn peaceful.
The curly dark hair was definitely Kagome's traits at work, but those eyes undeniably his. He brushed his thumb down over his head, careful of the soft spot, and traced the edge of a folded over dog-like ear. He wondered how long it would ve before they stood upright. The infant grimaced from the gentle touch, whimpering as he turned his head away.
"Maybe we shouldn't play with his ears yet. They're still brand new," Kagome commented, a soft smile gracing her lips. Inuyasha raised an eyebrow as he looked over his lovely wife. Lovely all except the bags under her eyes and the tossed hair.
"It's getting late, you should sleep," he suggested. Kagome reached out to softly stroke her son's cheek.
"So should you."
Inuyasha scooted down beside her, carefully laying the baby on his chest as his wife got situated for sleep. Kagome noted this, and asked him about it.
"What about that cradle?"
Inuyasha scoffed. Kagome chuckled, laying her hand on her husband's arm, just to the side of their infant.
"Attached to him already, huh?"
That brought a tinge of pink to the man's cheeks, alongside a muttered, "maybe."
Kagome pushed her face into the pillow.
"That's good. You're a father now, Inuyasha. You're supposed to feel like that."
