A/N: Hey there. I'm new to fanfiction and whatnot, so... meep. ⌒°(❛ᴗ❛)°⌒

To clarify: The timeline will be arranged chronologically according to the anime. Fem!Light will not be a carbon copy of the original, as such, she'll more or less be out of character. Everything else will be essentially canon (though the plot will be noticeably different, with certain aspects diverging from the original storyline). Not to fret about the genre, there is an official pairing and there will be inklings of romance, even if those moments will be few and far between.

Happy reading! Ahaha

Chapter 1 ➳ A Dose Of The Past

August 28, 2002

A young girl sat by the table, her lips stretched into a taut smile.

On the counter was a Staunton chess set- left in complete disarray. The pieces scattered around the board ruined her original plans for a structured, well-organized game. Knights and rooks were just some of the casualties of this battle for the ultimate victory.

In the battlefield, blood must be shed and backs must be stabbed; all for the greater good.

The adolescent had split herself into two personalities, the latter starting with a classic formation, just as she liked. In order to overcome this, she would have to break through her own form of defence. It was a daunting task that proved successful.

One splinter in her side, one break in the line, one move unseen, and now, one game; rapidly becoming a game both lost and won.

Her alter ego was a little different. Her plans were less formulated, more organic, and was left to her own free thinking. She saw through her own structures and reacted to them. She saw what needed to be done and did it. It didn't matter to her if she lost a few pawns here and there; they were meant to be used that way, as a tactical gambit, a compensating advantage.

All will be lost should a player come undone.

Strategy and Tactics, to her, were two very easy ways to overturn a game of Chess. This time, however, her other approach was much more…

"Checkmate."

…effective.

Thirteen year old Light Yagami looked up. Narrowing her eyes, she stared down at the chess pieces strewn in front of her. They were out of place and not in their correct orders. She flinched with annoyance. Slowly, she picked up a black pawn, hand glazed with meticulous care, and set it down on one of the tiles. She reached out for another piece, but stopped midway.

Despite being so disorderly, the chessmen maintained a pattern of elegance and solidity, creating an overall effect of pleasantness.

She wondered…why.

How could something so disorganised, so separated, so…sporadic…

…be so beautiful at the same time?

Then Light laughed, and chided herself for her erratic thinking. Taking great precaution, she rearranged the chess board; returning it to its original pristine state, with all its pieces placed where they should be. Satisfied with its new arrangement, she left, stepping out into the hallway as she closed the door.

Sunlight streamed into the empty room through an open window, and the chess set glistened.

It was a picture of perfection.
