This is a short little story that came to me during Math when I looked out of the window into the forest nearby. Nothing better to do in Math than write ;) Also Olivia and Peter are teenagers, just to fit the story a bit better.
Olivia sat on the forest floor scanning the area for the perfect low angle photo for her class when a heavy wind whipped her hair across her face. She set the camera down gently and tied her long blonde hair back into a messy ponytail.
The trees continued to rumble and rustle from the rising force of the wind but the noise did not conceal a snap of a branch from behind her.
Olivia unintentionally let out a small gasp and glanced around for the source but could find nothing. She shrugged, retrieving her camera, when another snap sounded and her fears rose. Now she could feel that she wasn't alone.
Her instincts kicked in and she took off at a breakneck pace, dropping her camera to use her arms to push any branches away from her path. The winds had another plan for her escape though and forced a large tree to bend and she slammed full force into it when she checked over her shoulder for the assumed pursuer.
Flat on her back, she shot up and shook her head hoping to rid herself of the growing disorientation but failed. She swerved through the trees in a haze until she reached an opening into the clearing.
Again, nature was against her and she tripped on a root. She succumbed to the darkness and when she started to awake she could faintly hear her name and wondered if she ended up in the hospital. Her eyes fluttered open and squinted to see the face above her against the sun.
She blinked hard as she willed her eyes to focus. When she cracked them open again she could distinctly see the face hovering above hers. It was Peter. She attempted to ask what he was doing here but it came out as a bunch of slurred mumbles.
"Olivia? Are you okay?" He raised his hand to brush the back of it against her cheek and grazed his thumb over the gash on her forehead, causing her to wince and Peter's face twisted with further worry.
He carefully pulled her into a sitting position but she tipped over slightly. Peter moved by her so she could lean into him. She cleared her throat and tried again to ask why he was here and succeeded.
"I got your message saying you would be out here taking some photos. I decided to surprise you but…" Olivia shifted her gaze to look at their intertwined hands when she noticed a classic picnic basket with a red and white checkered blanket peeking out.
A smile grew on her face and she tilted her head up to look into his worried gaze. She leaned up and gave him a small but meaningful kiss.
"Thank you." She whispered.
"For what?"
"For just being here."
