"What do you think you're doing?"
Brittany turned around to see Santana standing down the hallway behind her, hands on hips and an angry glare on her face. Brittany's forehead crinkled. Santana was mad. What was wrong? And what had she been doing, anyway?
"I…don't know," she answered honestly.
Santana rolled her eyes and stepped towards Brittany, clearly very upset. She was really scary when she was like this. Brittany stepped back.
"Oh, I don't know, maybe the fact that you told half the Glee club about us!"
Oh. That. "Well, it's the truth," Brittany replied in a confused voice, still unsure why Santana was mad at her. It wasn't like they were dating; they were just friends who happened to make out on occasion. Why was that a problem?
Santana sighed. "Britt, I told you not to tell people!" She explained her reasoning to the blonde for what seemed like the hundredth time. "They don't get it. They'll think we're gay, and they'll hate us for it. When we make out in front of guys, it's hot. But when nobody's watching, and we're not doing it for attention…it's gay."
"But we're not gay," Brittany argued, still confused. It was true. Brittany had made out with every guy in their school, and the fact that she had also kissed Santana didn't change that. Besides, she'd never kissed a girl who wasn't Santana. She didn't want to, either. Santana was…special.
"No, we're not gay," the cheerleader agreed. "We know that, but they don't! It's the same reason we can't sit together when Coach Sylvester's around! She doesn't understand!"
Brittany looked like she was going to cry. "I'm sorry…" she whispered, tilting her head down.
Santana sighed again. Brittany looked so scared. She hated yelling at her like this. "It's okay, Britt-Britt." Brittany's head perked up at the sound of her nickname, used by Santana and only Santana. "I know you didn't mean it. Just be careful next time, okay?" Brittany smiled and nodded enthusiastically. Santana chuckled, holding out her hand. The two girls linked pinkies and walked off down the hallway.
Santana never planned to be with Brittany. She didn't think they would ever date, and she knew that, after high school, they might not ever speak again. Brittany was different, though. She wasn't Santana's girlfriend, but she definitely wasn't just her friend. They were more than friends, and not just because they made out in Santana's basement at least once a week. She loved Brittany, and she could tell that Brittany sort of loved her, too.
Though she knew that they weren't and would never be together, that didn't stop Santana from giving Brittany a quick good-night kiss before walking back to her own car. And by "quick," well, let's just say it was a good thing no one was around.
