Different Pair

Chapter 1 Caleb's POV

It was the day of the aptitude test. Tomorrow we would decide the rest of our lives. I already know what I want to do anyway. I'm going to join Dauntless with my best friend Christina. She's a Candor, and we met at school. She's perfect.

"Beatrice and Caleb Prior!"

It was time for the test. This is easily the most important day of my life. Once inside of the test room, this lady sat me down in a chair and pulled out a syringe. I couldn't help but squirm in my seat; I hated needles.

"Don't worry, you won't feel a thing. My name is Tori. I'm the instructor for your test. Whenever I put this syringe in your neck, you'll immediately black out and you'll be put in a series of mental tests. Are you ready, Caleb?"

"How does this determine what faction I'll go into?"

"Erudite makes these simulations. None of the other factions know how they do it."

"What faction are you in?"

"Dauntless."

"Well, those are the only questions I have, so, I guess I'm ready."

"Okay. Get ready, I'm doing it...Right...Now."

Then everything went dark.

Chapter 2 Caleb's POV

I woke up in the same chair as I was before the test. Between the time Tori gave me the serum and now, I don't remember anything. How long had I been out? A few minutes? A few hours? Maybe even days?

"Tori, how long have I been asleep?"

"Only a few minutes actually. The test is over now, although, I don't think that helps your case."

"What? What's wrong? What are my test results?"

"The test didn't work on you. Your results were inconclusive. You had an aptitude for Dauntless, Abnegation, and Candor. The system didn't allow it, so, I just sent in your results as Abnegation."

"But that's impossible. You can only have one faction result."

"You didn't have just one faction result. This will happen, but rarely. They can't control you. The fact that your results came in like that...to certain people, you pose as a threat. You can't let anybody find out about you. They call it Divergent."

Chapter 3 Caleb's POV

I was walking home with Beatrice. We're not allowed to tell our results, but I had to know her results.

"Beatrice, what did your aptitude test say?"

She seemed nervous on the topic. She stuttered frequently when she said

"Oh, um, I, I got Abnegation, but I'm probably gonna choose Dauntless."

Should I tell her I'm Divergent? But Tori told me to tell nobody. It made me dangerous.

"What was yours?"

"Oh, um, mine was Abnegation, but I'm choosing Dauntless. Have you seen Christina since the test?"

"Yeah, she was eating outside after the test. She told me to tell you that she was choosing Dauntless despite what her test said."

"What did her test say?"

"The whole time I was eating with her she never said anything."

"I'm going to see if I can catch her on her way home."

"No, Caleb, don't. You'll get in trouble. Let's get home Caleb. You can talk to Christina tomorrow before the Choosing Ceremony."

"Okay. Let's get home, it's getting dark.

Even though I, as a sixteen year old, should be thinking about what faction to choose, but since I've known for a year that I'm going to choose Dauntless, I put the Choosing Ceremony out of my head, and the whole way home, I could only seem to think of Christina.
