A/N: Hi guys. This just kinda popped into my head, when my friend was telling me about a friend of hers that was living on a 500 calorie diet. I wondered how. Some people are crazy, ne?
500 Calories
Kagome walked over to a bed, studying her patient's chart. She pulled aside the curtain, looked up, and even though she was expecting it, felt ill. The girl sitting on the bed, looking impatient, was one of those girls who if she turned sideways she would disappear.
Her name was Abigail Waters. "Miss Waters?
She turned and surveyed the intern with contempt. "Yeah?
"My name is Kagome. I've looked at your chart, and this is what I want you to do. I want you to add one hundred calories of food a day, until you come up to two thousand.
The girl looked mutinous. "But-
"You are going to do this. You may think you're cute and thin, and all the guys will want you, but news flash. You are murdering yourself. Slowly. You look so emaciated, you could be a refugee from one of the Holocaust victims." The girl was swallowing nervously, and glancing around. "If you do not add more calories to your diet, you will die, and it will be because you killed yourself. Look at you. Cute and thin would be with flesh still on your bones. A little curve, some cheeks. You look like a skeleton.
"So. Add one hundred calories a day and get yourself healthy. You don't have to hurt yourself to be beautiful. I can imagine you with a healthy body, and you are gorgeous. So please, don't do this to yourself.
The girl nodded meekly. "Yes, ma'am. Can-can I go now?
"Well, I want you to stay for a while, and we'll get you a meal. Not too much food, or you'll get sick, but enough, ok?
She nodded. Kagome smiled and pulled the curtain back around the bed. She ordered some food for her on a nearby telephone and turned.
She was immediately accosted by two adults, seeming very angry.
"We heard what you said to our daughter," the man said, in a deep voice.
"We're gonna sue you for emotional damage!" screeched the woman.
Kagome glared. "So you're the parents who weren't paying enough attention to notice that your daughter was starving herself? She needed to hear that! Or would you like to bury your child at fifteen? She was on a five hundred calorie diet, goddammit! You cannot live on that! I told her what she needed to hear to get healthy, while you two let it get so bad she fainted in school and couldn't be woken up! If it were up to me, that girl would be living with people who cared about her. Not with you, a workaholic and a woman who gets liposuction and facelifts every few months.
Kagome turned and stormed off, the two adults behind her shell shocked. Kagome had almost been around the corner when she bumped right into someone.
"Sorry," she said, looking up.
The man staring down at her had one eyebrow up in amusement, He had a shock of white hair that matched his coat and very gold eyes.
"New intern?
"Yeah." Kagome bit her lip. "Are you going to get mad at me too?
He chuckled. "No. But I'm curious-why did you go into the field of medicine?
Kagome rolled her eyes. "To keep people from dying, or killing themselves.
"Why work at a county hospital?
"Because that's where I'm most needed, as an intern and as a doctor.
The man nodded. "Catch you later.
As he turned, Kagome got a glance at the name on his coat. Dr. Yamato.
