Running Doesn't Make You Weak

Prologue

The night was silent still. This was just another ordinary city. Suddenly screams whipped through the night. A male loud deep, A woman's medium toned shouts pressed against the man's. Over both of the voices you could hear sobbing, a child. Doors slammed and the night again grew silent. Neighbors closed their windows turned up their TV's this wasn't their problem. Everyone was still hiding a few hours later when once more the house door opened. No one saw a black clothed figure slip into the night. She slipped passed her house, passed the sleeping houses of her neighbors. Her strong legs picked up speed and she ran she slowed in front of her school. Never again would she pass those doors… NEVER.

The girl kept running the icy Michigan wind whipped her cheeks, freezing the tear tracks on her face. It was November two months into the school year and she had ruined everything. Her life was over. Everything she had worked for. The crap she had put up with to get there. The hours spent working for it. Destroyed. The only thing she had besides the clothes she wore was an iPod and a wallet with small cash, a plane ticket, a passport, and photos of her friends. Friends she would never see again.

The girl stepped into the airport. Her breathing was ragged, even her body complained after the two mile run. No one paid any attention to the girl. She was used to it somehow even a 5'8 emo girl could become a shadow if she wished. She made her way through the lines of the airport ignoring the looks the guards gave her when they saw she had nothing, no bags, no keys, only her iPod and her wallet.

She sat in the waiting area her hands massaging the ticket like it was worth more than gold. It was to her. She would never ask how the Mexican gangster with less money than she had gotten her a transcontinental plane ticket. She was sure she didn't want to know. She knew her secret was safe in California. She sent a silent goodbye and thank you to her friend. He wouldn't tell anyone even her best friend (his girlfriend) where she had gone. Everyone would think she had killed herself she had made sure of it. there would be press coverage the cities best student dead by her own hands… if only they knew… she forced herself out of her reverie it was over she had lost it all.

She put in her headphones and turned it all the way up. Letting the words to the music drown out her own thoughts. Thoughts who needed them? To many of them made you an outcast. They burned her mind, they broke her heart. Her dreams burned her. Love froze her heart. She didn't want it any of it. She didn't want to be human, she wasn't sure if she was.

She went onto the plane her eyes down cast. She settled into her seat. Leaning her head against the window she fought the memories. She didn't want any of it. She had to start over. She couldn't be who she was anymore. She had lost her chance. All the time she had put into securing it and she destroyed it…

The girl slammed her head against her knees, again and again, harder and harder until she felt a few small blood vessels pop. She stopped the bruising in her forehead a strong reminder of who she was. She pushed it away she didn't want to remember who she was. She didn't deserve what she had held. She didn't want to remember what she had to leave behind.

She looked at her passport, her ticket, her I.D. She was someone knew now. Older, more independent. A new country a new life. It was all over now.
