Santana Lopez smoothed down her dress, ironing out creases. She stood her full height breathing in and out slowly. She was standing outside a church, the beautiful picturesque type that you only see in the country, it was mid-spring so she wasn't a bit cold even in her strapless dress.
Usually she hated weddings, being surrounded by friends and family you haven't seen since the dark ages, kissing somebody else's whiskery old grandma, being told how much you'd 'blossomed', it was her idea of hell. But this day would be an exception.
She clutched onto her bouquet as if would offer her support and stop her collapsing into a nervous heap. She was meant to be happy, but she could feel tears coming, she had to hold them down. The whole of the glee club was here today, and they all knew about her and Brittany.
She wanted time to stop, she wanted it to be just her and Brittany, nobody else, she wanted to go back to senior year, their first year as a couple and she wanted that feeling back.
She could hear the murmuring behind church doors, so many people, but the only person she cared about was Brittany.
A car purred up the drive, an old fashioned Bentley, the perfect wedding car. Mr Pierce assisted Brittany out. Brittany looked up at Santana and smiled eagerly, Santana smiled back, but the smile was forced. The sort of smile you give to reassure somebody else when you are feeling just as nervous.
"Santana, you go first." Brittany said as the large mahogany doors opened wide and the priest announced her,
"Please stand for the bridal party."
A wedding march was played, and Santana began walk down the aisle, people grinning at her insanely and whispering in hush tones about how beautiful she looked. Santana felt sick, she could barely walk, and the stilettos didn't help. Half of her desperately wanted to run back, grab Brittany's hand and run… to anywhere but here.
The priest stood at the front of the church smiling and swaying merrily in time to the music he nodded at Santana and gestured for him to stand to his left. She took her place.
Following after Santana were the Bridesmaids, mostly glee girls. Quinn had drawn the short straw and was holding Lord Tubbington's lead; he waddled down the aisle at a painfully slow pace. Quinn looked like she was about to kick him, but Brittany had insisted he'd come to the wedding.
A moment later Brittany began to walk down the aisle, she was a vision in her beautiful white dress, her sequined blue shoes poked out of her fairy tale skirt as she walked ceremonially.
Santana's dress felt too tight, she was careful to breathe as the corset-like front constricted her. Brittany arrived at the end of the aisle, and broke away from her dad for a second; she hugged Santana. Santana hugged her back, it felt right, they fitted together, they were meant to be together. But it was about to all go wrong, and Santana couldn't stop it.
Brittany ended the hug and handed Santana her bouquet. Santana grasped the bouquet next to her own and gave Brittany an encouraging smile. Brittany returned the smile and turned away from Santana.
Brittany turned away from her best friend to face her husband. Santana died inside.
It was Brittany's wedding and Santana was just the maid of honour…
