''LUKA?'' Jukela shouting as she walked into the living room of her boat house as it rocked gently, Marinette following closely behind her, a bit wobbly as the poor girl still hadn't obtained her sea legs despite the numerous visits. Like so many times before, it made her stomach turn and would be a while until she felt at ease.
''That's odd he said he was staying in.'' Jukela said looking around to find no sign of her brother and noticing Marinette looking a bit green, helped to ease her mind from the worry a bit. She smiled at the sight, it was always funny to her some reason.
''He keeps changing his mind lately on even the simplest things.'' She added, her thoughts returning to her brother as she looked away.
''I just thought he'd might like to join us and the others.'' Marinette began nervously. ''I really hope I didn't upset him … He seemed so down after I told him how I felt for him.'' She mumbled as she glanced around the living room area. It seemed so peaceful and quiet as they both heard the sounds of the waves of the river splashing against the ship's hull.
''I tried texting him early in the morning but he replied he didn't want to come off as a burden.'' Marinette continued, sounding worried as she continued to search around.
Jukela shook her head as she peered around the corner into Luka's bedroom only to find his guitar and a well-made bed. ''He seemed ok after your date and honestly, if you only see him as a friend it's better to tell him then to lead him on.'' She sighed. ''Maybe I should have waited till mom got home before I left, he seemed quiet this morning but the thing is, my brother is often quiet. He just sits on his bed playing his guitar or mediating for hours at a time. He barely talks to anyone, even us.''
Marinette bit her lip, following her ice skating 'date' of sorts, she had been hanging out with Luka more often but to her, he was more like a big brother type friend, someone she trusted and felt safe around.
She did find him handsome but not in the same way her heart raced when a certain blonde would smile at her.
''Your heart is playing a different song to mine …'' He had said to her last night, the sadness evident in the tone of his voice.
''I'll try his phone again.'' Jukela said breaking Marinette out of her thoughts. The girl took a deep breath, worried that night had something to do with Luka's recent behaviour. It didn't help ease Marinette's worry as Jukela seemed to be getting worried herself by each passing second.
''Ok if I use your bathroom?'' Marinette asked as she put her hand over her mouth, she really need some space and to feel steady. Jukela just chuckled and nodded with an understand smile. ''Sure, go ahead, you know the way, right?'' As she nodded in the bathroom's direction.
Without answering Marinette nodded and as she was walking away, Jukela hit 'call' and within a second, she could hear Luka's phone ringing. She peered around, her boots causing the floorboards to creak and she searched around the kitchen/living area with an annoyed grunt. Eventually she tracked down the ring tone sound to a coffee table, the sound of his phone echoing from underneath a pile of papers.
Dread coiled within Jukela, she couldn't explain the unexpected fear that came over her as she picked up the paper, the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end. The second she saw her brother's phone, she held her breath, soon she could hear nothing except the sound of the paper unfolding in her hands. She dropped her own phone as she read it.
''Jukela, please forgive me, I'm so sorry. Don't go into the bathroom, call the police.''
Time stopped for Jukela as she read it a second time. Then she realised Marinette had gone to use the bathroom. She was about to yell out her name as she came back to reality and all she could hear was Marinette screaming in horror.
